UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino has added his voice to those calling for a winter World Cup in Qatar in 2022, insisting football should be played in the most suitable weather.

Ever since FIFA awarded the 2022 World Cup to Qatar in 2010, there has been growing pressure for the event to be moved to avoid temperatures that can reach 50 degrees centigrade, despite Qatar's plan to spend more than £65bn on air-conditioned stadiums and other facilities.

The major European leagues - led by the Premier League - have opposed the idea of radically altering their schedules to accommodate a winter World Cup, but Infantino has joined FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini in backing the move.

In an interview with the Times, he said: "Whenever you play the World Cup should be the best period for it. I had the same reflections on South Africa in 2010.

"Four years earlier in Germany it was nice sunshine. South Africa is a beautiful country, but at five o'clock, it's night and it's 0C. It's not a celebration of football."

Infantino went on to say that he did not understand why football had been historically played in winter.

"You see people in stadiums with hats and scarves," he said. "Why did England, who brought to us this beautiful game, decide that football is for the winter and not for the summer? Cricket.

"The month of June, which the most beautiful month to play football, is hardly ever used except for the Euros and the World Cup. But the World Cup is played only ever 12 years, more of less, in Europe.

"I fully share this view that you have to play in the best period for football; that is not June or July in Qatar. This is an issue that FIFA has to sort out. The sooner they do it, the better. The decision for 2022 was taken in 2010, so in 12 years you can organise yourself."

After the German FA threatened Fifa about how this would ruin domestic leagues for 3 seasons and could mean they could be sued, do you really need this?

Seems like the governing bodies of football are out of touch with the game to me

    by far and away, pal.

Just stinks of corruption, from the sister organisations run by cronyism. Can't stand the lot of the ****ing idiotic UEFA/FIFA ****ers. I sincerely hope this is opposed by the big European leagues and these organisations get sued. A winter break is a good idea, not to play a 6-8 week tournament with players coming back injured and knackered. The fact that the league programme will then shift into full summer i.e. ending in July - rather than May - seems lost on the ****ing doughnuts trying to spin this in their favour. which for the English would clash with our cricket season, and would also dovetail straight into the following season.

Qatar should never, ever have won this in the first place. Tis a ****ing disgrace, and I cannot see many people going to games out there with **** all else to do but hang around shopping malls, hotel bars and alcohol free grounds.

    Boils my piss.

I'm glad this decision is biting them in the arse. Hope it all goes tits up, Fifa murdered my love of international football a long time ago so I don't really give a stuff. Wish nothing but disaster on international football in the hope it will trigger some kind of revolutionary reform but it's not happening anytime soon. The only way it will happen is if fans lose interest.

FIFA & UEFA should be put in front of a firing squad with Swissie & Froggy at the end of the queue.

As has been said, Qatar should never have got the WC in the first place. FIFA ballsed up and now they're busy wriggling on their own hook. I say **** 'em.

Ah so its all Englands fault........................of course. Last I checked we had nothing to do with the accepting of bribes to play the world cup in some country not fit to host. The air conditioned indoor stadia plan was a non starter then? Morons.

Obviously I agree with everybody else (in the whole world) that it was ridiculous that Qatar ever won the bid for the WC.

What really gets me is that (apparently, if FIFA wasn't corrupt, etc) Qatar won A BID to host the WC. As in, a competition against many other countries.

The bid that they won - the entire thing/object/prize that they were bidding for - was to host the World Cup, which has only ever been played in Summer.

For me, if they want to move it, then the bid is invalid. I think it's disgusting.

FIFA lose appeal against free-to-air World Cup in the UK as 2022 winter talks continue
    By MATTHEW MORLIDGE

    PUBLISHED: 10:14 GMT, 18 July 2013 | UPDATED: 13:20 GMT, 18 July 2013

BBC and ITV will breathe a sigh of relief as FIFA and UEFA lost an appeal against a free-to-air World Cup in the UK.

The European General Court said in 2011 that the UK could keep 'protected' events such as the World Cup and Euro Championships for free.

But FIFA and UEFA appealed, saying they could not sell the events - specifically the games not involving the home nations or semi-finals

BBC and ITV had already secured the rights to broadcast the World Cup finals in Brazil 2014 for free, but there were fears that a pay-TV model could have been in place in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, the European Court of Justice has said that the original decision in 2011 was correct.

There has been controversy concerning the World Cup in recent weeks, with riots at the Confederations Cup in Brazil this summer, as well as FIFA's insistence that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar be played in winter.

Trouble: Riots overshadowed the Confederations Cup in Brazil

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has confronted the issue of playing in the searing June heat of Qatar by stating he believed it could not take place in the summer.

A FIFA spokesman has now said: 'As mentioned by the FIFA President yesterday, he will bring forward the matter of playing the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in winter to the FIFA executive committee on the occasion of their next meeting scheduled for October 3 and 4, 2013.

'This matter will now be with the executive committee and we can therefore not comment further before the meeting has taken place.'

Talks: A visual interpretation of a Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadium - could it be held in winter?
Talks: A visual interpretation of a Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadium - could it be held in winter?

Blatter has been moving towards the idea of a winter World Cup for several months, even though it would cause major upheaval for domestic leagues, and said yesterday: 'If this World Cup is to become a party for the people, you can't play football in the summer. You can cool down the stadiums, but you can't cool down the whole country.'

Though a Premier League spokesman told Press Association Sport: 'The Premier League position remains unchanged. The prospect of a winter World Cup is neither workable nor desirable for European domestic football.'

Temperatures can hit 50C in summer in Qatar and the plan as it stands is for stadiums to be air-conditioned.

Justice at last , the greedy fekkers can do one

Greedy, corrupt and a blatant disregard for fans or football. As long as their pockets are lined, they're happy. The sooner Blatter et al are removed or drop dead, the better
