I agree...releasing a full accounting of wages would be game-changing in terms of the way fans approach those controlling the purse-strings. Which, naturally, is why it will never happen.

All clubs have to release their accounts and wages are included as part of that. I don't know what more you want, individual players listed?

Release of contractual details upon signing, something that is required in some other sports.

True but they are already a year out of date by the time we get them, so not much use other than as a history lesson. A more current version would be a good start. These things wouldn't be difficult for clubs. Individual contracts wouldn't matter to me too much but it would help make owners take responsibility and not letting them get away with risking their clubs.

Wages are surely a private matter between the club and the player...we are fans, not shareholders. We may want to know, but have no right to know.

On the topic of financial (mis)management, the Football league is currently running a vote to find the best manager of each FL team's history. Currently winning the vote for the blue few down the road is the man who basically led them to administration and begun the spiral to league 2.

Had they known the wages they were spending at the time, would the fans have done more to change how the club was run? I once read that over 110% of their income was being spent on wages alone in their final Premier League season. This would be a much more useful figure for fans to have.

I do think that they should remove the rule allowing clubs to sign players for undisclosed amounts, I think that more transparency will make it clearer exactly how much teams are spending. We seem to do this, I presume it's to stop other teams noticing the amount of money we potentially have to spend and stop them over-charging us.

Agree 100% with these comments, I'm backing Rickie and JayRod to be even more effective this season...people are far too quick to write off players after they reach 30, but the ones with a quick, intelligent football brain can often play at the top level until their mid to late 30s (Glenn Hoddle, Teddy Sheringham and Ray Wilkins to name a few)

I don't think anybody is writing Lambert off because he's past 30 but it is a fact that the physical side of the game gets harder as players age. Lambert can't continue playing every game indefinitely and some of us think it makes sense to get a replacement in as early as possible.

Others have said we won't get another player like Lambert. That's fine, the team will just have to adapt the way we play. All teams have to do it. Look at Man Utd. When van Nistelrooy left their main attacking threat was Ronaldo, a very different player. He was replaced by Rooney who again was a different sort of player. van Persie has now come in and he's a different player again.

Are we all playing J-Rod wide here? Is he not almost a ready made Rickie replacement up top (though different of course). If memory serves, I recall him terrorising some defences with his pace and directness for a time when he was playing though the middle. He's only going to get better....

When he starts wide left he ends up moving down the middle anyway, with he and Lambert fluidly overlapping. I like it when he starts out there because he's good at unsettling the opposition defence by having a pop from the edge of the box or running at them. When he's up top he doesn't see a lot of the ball.

When we play a quick, direct move from back to front, Lambert drops deep bringing a defender with him and Rodriguez moves into the space. Because of the way we play, I think he's actually more likely to get into a one-on-one starting from the left than if he starts up front.

True. Point being, as has been stated previously, I don't see it as a disaster if we don't pull in a striker before start of season. Nice, yes. Absolute necessity, no. I think J-Rod could be a revelation this season.

I agree to an extent. Would like to see either a rapid winger come in or a striker to compete. The good thing being that there would be no pressure to perform from the off and any new striker/winger would be given time to settle.

I'd love to have Rodriguez starting on the wing with Labert, someone like Guidetti and Mayuka up front depending on the situation/fitness/form. Nothing at all wrong with strength in depth and if you count Rodriguez as a striker then we are definately laking in wingers who can hurt the opposition.

There is a theme here that has come again and again this summer as to how potential signings will fit in. If we sign Victor, what about Cork? If we sign Banega, what about Gaston? If we sign a striker, what about Ricky?

I think as fans we don't really look at it in the way the club do. We look at the best eleven on paper and think "we're weakest at RM so that's what we need". But what we really need are quality players that significantly improve the squad and to an extent we need to be flexible as to where these players play.

So, to put it in conext, an obvious area to add quality and depth is in the attacking 4. Ideally, this would be a european standard right forward who is left footed and likes to come inside. Not a lot of those around though. But Banega may be available. If so, we'll see more of Gaston on the right/left and stick with Ricky and J-Rod as our options up front. Or a striker might be available who can also play wide if needs be, in which case we'll continue using Gaston in the middle and seeing a lot of J-Rod in wide positions.

I personally think we're only after 1 more attacking player ... but we have to be flexible as we're not "weak" anywhere so adding real quality is more important than position.
