Cheikou Kouyate open to Newcastle United move

By Matt Law, La Liga Correspondent
Filed: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 17:05 UK

Anderlecht defender Cheikou Kouyate has revealed that he would be interested in joining Newcastle United this summer.

The 23-year-old, who has also been linked with Southampton, is widely expected to depart Belgium this summer with a number of clubs interested in his signature.

"We are all ambitious. I want to move in my career. If I improve, big clubs from abroad will come for me," he told reporters at a press conference.

"The story of Arsenal was true but nothing materialised. Arsene Wenger is a great coach and to show an interest in me was fantastic. Newcastle could be great as well, but let's wait and see."

A number of Ligue 1 clubs, including Lyon, have also been credited with an interest.

Pace and strength, still learning the game though.

Hmm... Yeah but the last 'beast' we were linked with was Sissoko.

After roaring against Chelsea he quickly became about as 'beastly' as a repressed guinea pig.

Harsh, but fair. Go Moussa! Good goal tonight and next season, you wait! :D

Give the lad a chance. He came in when we were struggling and people expected him to be Superman. He was burned out through over use and wasn't in his favoured position. I think if he's played in the right position in the right formation, after the summer break then he will be a beast again.

If we could get Kouyate too, that would be great.

GFN seem to think us and Southampton have actually made offers. Again, it is the fee which is a stumbling block.

He comes in, Willo goes out (with a big pat on the back for doing his level best). Then just the strikers to sort. I would love us to replace Willo with this fella. Have a word Papiss.

Completely. To have players lined up to succeed Colo when he leaves would be great planning from the club. And, for a club placed 16th last season, what a CB line up that would be - Colo, MYM, Saylor, Kouyate with Good and Streete on the development list. #solid.

Kouyate, SDJ, Remy. Heaven, thy name is Joe Kinnear.

Willo did quite well yesterday, seemed to be working hard on doing the easy thing and not making any mistakes. Of course the opposition wasn't what he'd normally be facing.

Nice guy. He never does **** on purpose, plays at his absolute limits. He seems a genuine lad who is trying his best to improve. However he just isn't good enough and we need to bite the bullet.

    Agree completely with this.

Always given 100% and never given the club any grief, a la Barton or Ranger. If he does go I hope he goes to a decent club and has success with them. He could then always get back in touch with us and tell us what it's like, success that is !!!!!!!!!!
