<peacedove>orangutan

To see an orangutan in your dream signifies your wild inner character and sexual desires.

Alternatively, an orangutan suggests that you are being manipulated.

Far-right militants in Italy are suspected of hanging nooses in protest at the country's first black minister, prompting a police investigation.

The nooses appeared on lampposts with posters signed by extremist group Forza Nuova in the city of Pescara, as minister for integration Cecile Kyenge was visiting for a conference on immigration and citizenship.

"Immigration, the noose of the people!" read one of the slogans on the posters.

Another said: "Everyone should live in their own country".

It comes just two days after Ms Kyenge, who was appointed to the cabinet in April, was compared by a senator to an orangutan.

Of Congolese origin, the minister has called for a reform of Italian law to make it easier for children born to immigrant parents to acquire citizenship.

Prime Minister Enrico Letta called for an end to the insults against Kyenge, saying this was a "shameful chapter" for Italy and could lead to a "major clash".
Ever since being named on the cabinet, Ms Kyenge has faced a barrage of abuse - particularly from members of the anti-immigration Northern League party.

Northern League MEP Mario Borghezio said her nomination was "bloody stupid" and that she had "a face like a housewife", while one local party activist said the minister should be raped in a vicious Facebook rant about crimes committed by immigrants.

Northern League senator Roberto Calderoli, who has courted controversy for years with a series of racist, sexist and Islamophobic jibes, on Saturday said: "When I see pictures of Kyenge, I cannot help thinking of similarities with an orangutan".

In an interview with the La Repubblica daily newspaper, Mr Calderoli then claimed that he had animalistic comparisons for all the ministers, including ones who looked like a frog, a peacock and a St Bernard's dog.

Mr Letta said Mr Calderoli's remarks were "unacceptable" and called on Northern League leader Roberto Maroni to put an end to the attacks by his party members "as quickly as possible".

Mr Calderoli is deputy speaker of the Senate and there have been calls for his resignation from centre-left lawmakers and anti-racism campaigners.

Pretty sad in this day and age but I guess when you look at the blatant expressions racism in football there it probably doesn't come as a shock.

for me Racism is born of an unbalanced and\or undereducated mind. When you look at some of the poorest places in the world Racism is quite prevalent and all too often it is used by those seeking power to anger motivate people to support their cause\aims.

Closing it is not going to solve the problem. In a good way UK is one or two steps ahead of Italy in particular, and other European countries in general.<ok>

At times racism is confused, some become so because of their own status compared to those they are being racist against and in fact they do not actually dislike or hate them because of skin colour or ethnicity but rather jealousy or anger.

I think that accounts for a significant amount of racism.

In Ireland for example many displayed racist tendencies because those from African nations could easily claim a host of benefits Irish nationals out of work could not. That for me is misplaced racism born of frustration and anger at the state and their own situation.

in poor countries those seeking power can manipulate this anger and stoke it up for their own political aims

9. And a thread on the Liverpool board on the Not606 forum is going to 'solve the problem' is it?

Yes, because that's what I meant <doh>

I guarantee this goes the way I suspect...

If it does, then close it. I can't see any reason to do so otherwise, tbh.
We have plenty of OT threads, and this is as legitimate a subject as any, I think.

To further my argument on using other factors to incite misguided racism, Italy has terrible economic problems.

We need to educate ourselves about evils in our society. This particular matter is in the media and people have been debating about it.
Saying something against it does not make you a racist.<ok>

I've been to Italy a few times and as much as I love it (and the majority of people I've come across have been extremely hospitable) there is a serious undercurrent of racism amongst many. Immigration as a topic is openly discussed often in terms that made me cringe. They use the excuse of "pride in their country" a lot.

Racism, Anti-Semitism, discrimination against Romany, homophobia, antipathy towards the Catholic Church on the back of a worldwide depression - welcome back to the 1930's

Historically racism in Italy as with Spain grew from direct conflict with Arab and North African groups over a considerable period, these groups were lumped together as the moors.

The crusades, melded the war against these various groups into Christian doctrine when anyone not white or Christian was a heretic and good Christians were duty bound to go and "convert" them.... (not saying it is Christian doctrine any longer!!!) remember at points during these conflicts various moor armies held southern Spain & Italy. These conflicts spanned 2 centuries. Intolerance can be fairly ingrained during hostilities until it no longer has a specific reason or justification for future generations but still exists. I mean try the generalised anti German sayings still present in English generations not directly involved in a 5 year conflict. Now try that over 200 years. This is not a justification simply an historical reference point if you will, comparative to the increase in racial intolerance in England during the 50's and 60's when immigration began to extend to countries of different ethnic background in a larger way...when your population is no longer homogenous you now have someone to blame for all your ill's.....

Modern day is not very different, the intolerance of fairly religious populations, mixed with harsh economic circumstances and a close proximity,( first step in many cases) of immigrant influx leads to exploitation by racist & fascist groups such as the northern league.

Racist attacks spiral during economic hardship, Golden Dawn are a nasty bunch of ****s

http://www.euronews.com/2013/01/20/protests-in-athens-sparked-by-racist-killing
Thousands of anti-racism protesters have rallied in the streets of the Greek capital.

The march follows the stabbing of 27-year old Pakistani Shehzad Luqman, killed as he rode his bicycle to work in an Athens suburb on Wednesday.

Racist attacks are on the rise as Greece struggles through its worst economic downturn in six decades.

Pakistani community leader Javied Aslam has called for lawmakers to take action:

“The government must take measures and demonstrate that, yes, there are laws and we do not live in the jungle, that laws exist and that people can be punished.”

Earlier, a group gathered around Luqman’s coffin to pay their respects.

Two Greek men have been charged with his murder.

One of them has been linked to Golden Dawn, a party that seeks to rid Greece of immigrant workers.

The United Nations warns that racism has reached alarming levels during the financial crisis, which has left more than a quarter of the Greek labour force out of work.
