The Mercury online are running a feature all week to find the greatest ever Leicester City 11: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Search-greatest-Leicester-City-XI-starts/story-1952 Today it's goalkeepers, then defenders, midfielders and strikers later in the week. We will never settle on this so it's probably a waste of time - but a fun one nonetheless. I suppose for 'keepers it's got to be between Shilton and Banks. I never saw them play so can't really comment. For me it's Flowers as he was the best I ever saw in a Leicester shirt.
Lucky enough to see Shilton and even have a photo taken with him so he will always be number one for me.
As a 21 yo and not going back to the oneil era as they would all be in it, a post 1st pearson team: Schmeichel Naughton Morgan Hobbs Berner Knockaert Wellens Fernandes Marshall King Yakubu i could never quite tell how good Abe was.
I understand, I would be tempted to pick all MON era players with the exception of a couple maybe. I think with this though they are saying you can't have current players.
Banks, World Cup winner whilst at city, although Shilts is obviously a good shout. As for keepers I've seen, probably Flowers or Keller
Since I got into football this is the best City team I have seen Schmeichel Naughton Elliott Taggart Berner Knockaert Izzet Savage Guppy Dickov Ferdinand
We have been incredibly fortunate to have the two best post-war English keepers playing for our club ... not only were both way better than any keepers since but they were both, IMHO, also better than Kasper's dad, never mind Kasper himself. I was too young for Banks but my old man and uncles thought he was superb (and let's face it '66, and THAT save from Pele in the 70 WC finals) - but the old man seemed to think that Shilts would (and did) eclipse him... Shilts was far and away the best I've seen personally - putting the ball high into our penalty area was more or less surrendering possession to us - Shilts would just scream for it, leap, and catch (not punch) it ... opposition forwards would just bounce off him. Awesome On the defnsive front, if Gary Coatsworth is not included then this task loses all credibility ...
The Greatest the one and only Gordon Banks Nobody else could control the goal area or a defence like he did.
All time XI from 1969 (my first season at Filbo) to date Shilton Nish Cross Sjoberg Whitworth Glover Izzet Weller Heskey Worthington Lineker Subs Wallington, Kaamark, Matt Elliot, Steve Walsh, Lennon, McAllister, Alan Smith
Compelling argument there FF, don't think many would disagree. I think in the end, Shilton will probably clinch it. Why Savage Proud? My midfield duo is always Lennon and Izzet when I'm asked this question. Just interested to know.
Think we have been around similar eras! Heskey surely is pushing for one of the strike spots though. David Connoly was quite the player whilst at us too.
Flowers Walsh Elliott Taggart Kamark Eadie Izzet Lennon Joachim Heskey Cottee Notable mentions:- Sinclair, Rowett, Ian Marshall, Gary Parker, Theo Zagorakis, Andy Impey. Would put Knockaert straight in there but Merc's rules state no current players.
Cannot believe you lot, how many of you seen Banks play? If you never seen him play don't say Shilts is the best goalkeeper we have had, just have some respect, I seen Shilton make his debut at 16 and he was class and you knew he was going to be a great keeper But Banks would always be the greatest!
Think that's the point Jambawamba - I never got to see Banks play for us - so my opinion is only based on what I have seen personally - many posting above won't have seen anything pre- Martin O'Neil.
I saw Banks play and he was brilliant. The only goalkeeper that I have seen who was better was Shilton. Shmike Snr comes a very close 3rd.
Keller Whitlow Walsh Elliot Kaamark Izzet McAllister Lennon Heskey Newel Ooooo Tommy Wright Ok slightly out of position and I've left a few favourites out as well such as Maculin(Ali), Ramsey, Rooster Russell, kitson, Tags, Sinclair and Prior
I watched Banks and Shilton play, and Banks was the Master and Shilton his apprentice and with the twin towers in front of them,G Cross and J Sjoberg. and the best manager was Matt Gillies...
