Every day I think to myself we should have a thread that is nothing to do with signings or idle speculation but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find Saints/football related topics that will keep people interested. Usually posters find something sarcastic or caustic to say about my efforts or they go totally off topic and that is just the polite ones. Perhaps our hyper efficient moderators could put their collective superior thinking abilities together and address this task and come up with a new topic each day to keep us all amused.
Absolutely right. At least, rationally. Irrationally, the Saints performance has affected my mood all my life, especially as for my entire adult life I've usually been in a minority of one at work or in the pub. It's not about our input, it's about identity.
Hate is a pretty strong word. I don't think you're expected to like every poster on this site or indeed nor should you expect all or any of them to like you. So in all probability the feeling is mutual.
Arrogant? In what why? Discussing targets that the manager has confirmed are targets? Hoping that the side finishes high up the league (I've yet to see anyone say CL)? I cant see any threads, posts or heard anyone being arrogant about Saints, we're just enjoying the ride. Why feel the need to have a pop?
Hating people you don't know on a football forum is a bit of a waste of energy to be honest. I find the posts and people's style on here variously amusing, informative, intelligent, erudite, idiotic, backward, enjoyable, and often a combination of all the above. Hate though? Not a speck of it. You'll find people's personalities are substantially different a lot of the time to those they portray from behind a keyboard.
Once again a thought-provoking thread from St Godders - there is alot of positive comments on here these days - perhaps some are a little over-confident, but arrogance - well maybe. I have read some very dimissive posts about the teams coming up that reminded me of similar comments coming from QPR fans and the like about us - so maybe you might have a point on that score. But overall - I'd suggest that there is alot 'on the bus' (bless him!) with our future prospects in the EPL.
Look a little closer Ducky. Plenty of top 6 predictions there to be found. One guy on the BBC comments section even suggested title contenders!
The only arrogance with regard to transfers that I've seen involved some dismissing Cardiff when they were in for Wanyama, and even that was balanced by people pointing out that Cardiff was essentially in the position that we were a year ago: ambitious, with funds to spend, and not willing to settle for chasing only more prosaic targets. Make no mistake, we're not on the top of the list for most established players; all things equal, most of them would rather go to one of the historic giants. But if enough players 'settle' for us, perhaps over time that will change.
There's certainly some big talk and perhaps a hint of arrogance around from some fans so I can see the point. I'm sure some comments aren't meant seriously though. Any talk of a title challenge is definitely not serious and even talk of the top 6 is premature. I'm all for excitement and being positive but, as I've said elsewhere, the "Cortese regime" has yet to surpass the level of success that we achieved in the 90s. Let's not get ahead of ourselves - we haven't actually achieved anything notable yet.
Good point Puck. I guess we are heading to where we were ten years ago but not quite yet. In some ways we have spent all of this money to change a League 1 team into a competitive Premier league team but this is only the position we were in with WGS at the helm and the likes of Beattie, Pahars, Kller, Fernandez and Anders in our ranks. That side was a mixture of homegrown players and international players for some medium sized nations. Which is not too disimilar to where we are now. If we could finish 8th in the league this season and get to the Cup final it would be a great achievement, with out a doubt. However in the grand scheme of things it is only getting us back to the level where we were ten years ago. The important thing and the real mark of Cortese's ambitions would be what we do after we reach that level.
It's excitement and when you're excited you're less inclined to consider the negatives. Last season was very much one of trepidation with a squad untested at this level. Now we know we have players who can perform at this level and have added to the squad with big money signings. Whilst not considering relegation is arrogant I'm looking forward to this season as much as our championship campaign. That season we knew we were too strong to get involved in relegation so it was about whether we could push for a play off spot. The players were relaxed and clearly enjoying their football and got off to an incredible start and one thing led to another . Get a good start this season and who knows?
I'm only pulling your leg, StG. I'm too busy watching the WUMs to instigate any new threads myself. That, and trying to write a guide to this forum that the least techy minded can work out. Besides, any new threads I can come up with invariably end up with me thinking it would only be of academic interest to myself.
Please get real. The 07/08 season we finished 8th and had a very good team (better than your current team) and still couldn't break top 6, although you could argue the FA cup was a distraction. But honestly you haven't got a chance and i don't see what you've got to be arrogant about after 1 season...
