The myth of the 20 goal striker

Do you think as fans we get hung up too much on the idea of a 20 goal a season striker? Statistics from the Premier League era are quite interesting:

Not sure about the premier league, but I did a thread some time ago about the championship. Most teams promoded don't have a 20 goal a season striker. Most 20 goal a season strikers don't get promoted.

We didn't get anyone into double figures last season.

All the championship 20+ strikers last year played for mid table sides.

 

How about Glen Murray for Palace? he put in 30.

 

it doesnt matter where the goals come from, as long as you are scoring goals and winning games....

a reliable goal scorer is of huge value to any team, but you're no better off having 4 players who score 5 each, than one who scores all the goals and gets 20. in fact its much worse as if that striker gets injured your up the creek, one of our successes last season was having the goals spread around the team, it meant that injuries to strikers if they happened wouldnt derail our season.....

 

I would be happier with 2 strikers who score 10 each. That way we aren't relying on 1 player.

 

The exception that proves the rule, I did say MOST.

And that only got them 5th, they had to go through the lottery of the playoffs. Neither Cardiff nor Hull had a scorer in double figures in the league and they finished 15 and 7 points above them

 

Shouldnt have posted it on this board, their whole squad won't get 20 goals between them

A 20 + goal scorer is very handy to have but its not necessary just as long as there are others who can score their fair share, We have struggled in that department for a few seasons but have been very lucky that we have always had someone to score the goals..without michu last season we would have been in trouble imo. I do think we have got it right for this season though....i hope anyway...
