When I was a young lad say 15 years ago I remember having a conversation about the amount of top quality strikers england had at the time...

    Shearer
    Ferdinand
    Cole
    Beardsley
    Fowler
    Owen (grr)
    Wright
    Sheringham

But to name a few and all these strikers would walk into most if not all premiership teams today.

Thing is we had 4 of what I called the BEST strikers in the country at about the same period.... Man where have them days gone...

Why has it all gone so wrong for England and the striker situation....

Only Rooney would compare to any of the strikers of old at the moment......

    Defoe cant score.....
BENT - Was a mackem so he does not count.
Crouch is well........... tall and never gets more than 15 goals a season.
Young.... never scored many in a season
    Sturridge looks quality but unproven...

All the strikers I quoted scored or nearly scored 15-30 goals every season for many season.... some consistantly over 20 so for this reason only Rooney would fit the bill.

I gotta say, look at those players' international records and compare them to the new set.

    Shearer (1 in 2)
    Ferdinand (1 in 3)
    Cole (1 in 15)
    Beardsley (1 in 6)*
    Fowler (1 in 4)
    Owen (1 in 2)
    Wright (1 in 3)
    Sheringham (1 in 5)
The average goals per game is 1 in 5
*Beardsley brought a lot more to teams, whereas the others are more or less only there to score goals

    Rooney (1 in 3)
    Carroll (1 in 2)
    Bent (1 in 3)
    Crouch (1 in 2)
    Defoe (1 in 3)
    Heskey (1 in 9)

Average goals per game is 2 in 7. As well as this, modern players bring far more to the game as a whole than those mentioned earlier.

It's not that the strikers are getting worse, it's that the Premiership is getting better. Defenders are no longer just cloggers; would Steve Bruce have managed 300+ games for Man U if he was playing the like of Rooney, Drogba, Carroll, Anelka, Tevez week in, week out?

Also, managers have always cared more about the defensive side of the game, so new strategies are created to stop teams scoring. It's simple really, the strikers are far better now, but, so are the defenders
