Good luck to Steve. He's a top bloke and can still do a job in the premiership.

FORMER Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper is wanted by Hull City.

Harper’s 20-year association with Newcastle ended last month, when his contract at St James’s Park expired.

The 38-year-old is keen to play on for two more seasons – and Steve Bruce wants to take him to the KC Stadium.

Bruce is looking to strengthen the club’s goalkeeping department.

And the former Sunderland manager believes Harper’s experience will be invaluable to his team, which was promoted to the Premier League in May.

Speaking earlier this week, Harper said: “I’m still looking for a club, and hopefully the phone will ring.

“I’m only 38, and I’d like to think I’ve got a year or two left in me.”

Harper, signed from non-league club Seaham Red Star in 1993, made 199 appearances for United.

The Easington-born player has arranged a charity testimonial at St James’s Park, pencilled in for September 11, featuring former Newcastle and AC Milan players.

Tigers boss Steve Bruce is in the market for custodial back-up after acquiring ex-Rangers man Allan McGregor from Besiktas - and it's claimed that a one year deal to bring Harper to the KC Stadium is on the table.

Don't think Harps will be overly excited by a one year deal at Hull, it's hardly worth upping sticks for.

You only get one career and if Steve Harper isn't ready to go yet, then I say fair play to him.

It's a credit to him that he can attract the interest of Premier League clubs - at 38 he's fast approaching retirement but looks capable of keeping his playing days alive at the highest level. <ok>

I hope someone comes along and offers something to Harps that will suit him and his family. He is a top bloke and true professional.
It really is the least he deserves and l hope that whatever transpires for him, be it Hull or somewhere else he has a good ending to an exemplary career.

40 year old Schwarzer went to Chelsea, albeit as back up. So there's still hope for Harps, though picking the ball out of Hulls nets for a year is surely not the best offer he's going to get.
I wonder if there will be much interference from his old adversary Given, who can't be happy as a number 2 at Villa?
Say Ruddy leaves Norwich, they go for Forster, Celtic get Given...

    Hull fan in peace.

I'm not sure how much truth there is in this rumour - we seem to be linked with every player under the sun at the minute.

I thought I had heard that Harper was retiring at the end of last season? Did he play much for you last season? I haven't seen anything of him in years so no idea what he is like now to be honest, but judging by the comments above it seems he could still do a job in the PL?

Didn't Hull just sign McGregor? I'm afraid Harps would be trading one bench for the other.... Hold out for an offer from a team such as Bournemouth, man.

He'd barely play at city if he came i imagine, Mcgregor will be our number 1, can't see the attraction for him to sit on another bench,

Would he move down to the champ/league 1 if he got first team football?

He went to Brighton on loan, so it's not out of the question, even to one of the relegated PL clubs (QPR?) or promoted Div 1 clubs.

He's out of contract with Newcastle United and is a free agent.
