AP said #nufc have a list of four strikers this summer compiled by himself and Graham Carr.

Apparently Carr wanted Aubameyang or Gameiro, Pardew wanted Premier League experience and suggested Bent or Carlton Cole... But not before James Tomkins who was top of his wishlist and considered a far more important signing than any striker when we already had quality goalscoring options like Ameobi champing at the bit.

"Tomkins’ name was on the top of a wish-list handed to new director of football Joe Kinnear before he jetted off to Italy for a family break." - http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spor...s/james-tomkins-price-wrong-newcastle-4881099

Tomkins and Cole. Thank Christ Pardew isn't in charge of transfer policy. And let's just hope Kinnear is more in tune with Carr's sensibilities than he is Pardew's.

"Alan Pardew has assured Newcastle United fans that there should be no concern when it comes to the Magpies’ summer recruitment drive." - http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spor.../alan-pardew-assures-newcastle-united-4881441

Summer recruitment drive? So far its like NUFC are one of those poor 90+ year olds who end up on the wrong side off the motorway. Pootling along whilst oncoming traffic roars past on every side, the whole world a confusing, bewildering mess. And looking almost certain to end in tears.

My first thoughts when I saw this. If anything it signals there is going to be no deviation from the hoofball battering ram methods

Indeed, he's a fine judge of player. Remember when he said Shola was as good as Tevez?

“He’s as good a striker as I’ve ever worked with. And I’ve worked with a few – Zamora, Tevez, Harewood, Sheringham.”

“A bit of me wanted the fans to show their appreciation. He’s had a career that’s been difficult – sometimes he’s made it difficult for himself – but he’s been outstanding.” - http://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2011/04/04/shola-is-as-good-as-tevez/

Not to mention choosing Harewood ahead of Tevez when at West Ham, and keeping Mascherano out of the team.

Pardew apparently fought hard to get Obertan to the club. doh!

I'd just tell Pards to get back in his box.

    The process should be....

Pards identifies a POSITION we need to fill
Carr recommends a player to JFK for that position
JFK pitches it to fat Mike

I think Pardew's record in transfers if fcking abysmal. The ideal scenario is Pardew has a strong blueprint for a side, a tactic he wants to play. Within that, he can look at what he has and then decide what he needs.

What are we going to play? I'd like to see 3-4-2-1, personally, then a counter-attacking 4-5-1 as plan b. For that, we have 3 decent CB's but are really struggling if one gets injured - therefore a decent CB is a must, someone young but determined.

#1; Rhys Williams. Can also cover RB and DM. Good option.

In my preferred formation, I am using wing backs. I currently have Santon, Debuchy and Haidara so I'm fairly comfortable with that. Anita can also cover on the right, so I don't think I'm buying here. And I think I'd be happy with Jonas as backup to Santon on the left. Job done.

I also play with 2 DM's. I currently have Tiote and Sissoko who will be the bedrock of this formation, so I'm happy with that. Again Anita can play in here, as can Bigirimana. If we went for Williams, so can he and so can MYM so I'm going to say I'm comfortable here too.

I now move up the field and will play our trump cards in this area. There's three positions up here where a variety of players can do a good job. Ben Arfa and Cabaye are my first choice here. One to unlock doors, one to go past players. That's good variety and I believe this could be a real winning area - next generation tactic of TWO in the hole! Cabaye's going to have one eye on dropping deeper to collect and release, whilst Ben Arfa will be making runs in behind, runs with the ball as well as collecting and carrying. This is the strongest area of my team and as I have Marveaux, Vuckic, Gouffran and again Anita able to fill in, as well as being able to drop one and go with two up top, I'm pretty happy with how this area looks.

Finally up front. I have Cisse. I have Campbell. If I play two up front, I need one more. So I need an option, someone mobile who's got something a bit different. I am either going to need some class - that'll be Loic Remy - or I am going to need some height and strength in the air - I guess Bony is the man for the job. Preference is height because we don't have enough from set plays. Could do with a beast like Lukaku, but I'm guessing we don't have the cash or ambition. That said, I'll take that as my preference.

    #2; Romelu Lukaku.

Strangely, I don't see how we can get so worked up over no transfer activity when realistically we only need a couple of players. Without Europe, the same depth isn't needed and we need to make sure the likes of MYM, Anita, Haidara, etc., are near the 1st team. Up front is the issue because we can't really rely on Cisse as much as we'd like.

Anyway, apologies for posting about a team selection, when ultimately all I wanted to say was we need a clear blueprint of formation(s), to which Pardew needs to look at exactly who we've got to play there, and where there's gaps needs to go to Carr/Kinnear with a clear remit - I need a striker, who is strong, and plays to x strengths. From there, Carr looks at what he's got, what he's heard, what he's seen and presents definitive names back to Pards/Kinnear. Then there's an agreement to go get 'em, at which point Kinnear gets on the dog n bone to the agent, or club, tells them how he's the second coming of Christ and seals the deal, with Charnley drawing up the contract. Job done.

Pardew and JK out, Carr to run the Club, he's got more passion and knowledge than both of them put together.

<laugh><laugh> You gotta love the press.

You read the actual quotes from Pardew and it reads ok bar the "over the line" hilarity. Then because no names are given, they decide to hazard a wild guess at who each camps selections are. What an utter load of bollocks. I'm sure all parties would like PEA or Gamerio but its not gonna happen realistically. One has joined the CL runners up. The other is currently having his pockets lined by one of the two richest clubs in France. As for the links to Cole and Bent - there is absolutely zero substance to either so far. This all adds up to "we haven't actually got a clue and we're just playing a guessing game like the fans". Yet some choose to use it as a stick to beat either party with? <laugh> Now where did I put my pitch fork and torch..........

Completely agree with this. And I would like to add that Pardew got that speech absolutely bang on the money. Asserted authority, allayed fears, told it like it was and came across as very dignified. In my book he got some integrity back on that one and really helped present the club in the right way. Respect where it's due.

As I said above, if he's looking for a 4th choice CB, why not Tompkins? He's 24, bags of experience and may be no world beater, but I'd feel happier having him step in the Williamson. Plus he's English. No worse that Rhys Williams or Lewis Dunk, for example, and we're unlikely to sign a Subotic or Kyrgiakos as backup CB for 16th-placed NUFC....

He needed to come out and say something and I agree he pitched it correctly. As long as we dont losr anyone of note then I would be happy with say tompkins and a striker. Absolutely MUST get a decent striker 'over the line' tho. Will be a disaster if we start the season with what we have.

Glad to see some sensible comments in the last 3 posts - Pardew has done a good job in that interview. Any link to players is pure speculation so you can't criticise him for players we probably won't sign.

Ultimately, we've all got to get massively behind Pardew this season, whatever you thought of him last season... as the alternative if he gets sacked is only going one way... and it's unthinkable. Please, god, no.

I'm staying firmly behind St Pards. If there is a really cold icy wind, I might get behind Joe because he has the size to be a good windbreak. You not fancying another stint of JK then? Even though he taught Pep Guardiola everything he knows? Harsh.

Disagree. After the euphoria died down, I cannot see Ashley appointing Kinnear. Mainly because he will still WANT the DoF role filled. Even if Pards goes, which I doubt he will because there's just no way we'll be as bad as last season, I think we'd go for another manager.

I think there's a specific quote from JK from last year where he says he'd only consider DoF roles as a way to get back into management, and wouldn't shy away from sacking a manager and taking over... remember it's JK who will call these shots now - I hope it won't happen, but equally I don't think we should be naive.

Edit: found the quote!... "I would consider something like a director of football post. But I would do that for just one reason and that is to get myself back into full-time management. If I was a director of football and the manager was struggling and got the old tin-tack, I would tell them that I'd take over."

We need two strikers. One starting and another back up as when Shola ****s off (well lets hope he does anyway as I can't take another season of his wretchedness). We also need a winger with pace who can actually cross and another cb. Cabaye will most likely leave. Then you would have to look at some creativity in midfield as Tiote and Jonas don't cut it. The former is too reckless and the later is just too ****! Hopefully we can get a midfielder who can take a decent corner
