Come on you lot I think this deserves its own thread! Give the lad a bit of credit, right up there with Bradley Wiggins winning the TdF in my book
I agree, I have a lot of reasons for disliking the Scots having lived amongst them for 15 years, but credit where credit is due this is a fantastic achievement and congratulations to him. He has at least tried to make himself more approachable, and credit to him also for that.
shame Alec Salmond tried to hijack it as a political statement... cant wait for them to get kicked out of the EU.
Yeah well done. I was glued to my iPad watching yesterday. I've always wanted him to be successful but watching him cry last year really made me warm to him. Well done Andy. US open next.
Apparently, yesterdays final was a recent record for viewing figures with 17.3m people watching it live.
Aye, I saw that on BBC Sport website. It also broke the record for most Tweets per minute. Murray was mentioned 120,000 times per minute at the climax of the final, beating the 116,000 per minute set during the Spice Girls' performance at the London 2012 Games. I know. The ****ing Spice Girls. Of all of the things that happened last summer, the ****ing Spice Girls...
The win for Andy Murray was just awesome - for someone old enough to have witnessed as a young lad England winning the 1966 WC that for me was on a par. After 77 years of waiting, nothing should take away the sheer magnitude of what he has just achieved be it for Scotland or more importantly Britain. Well done son.
I watched my first Wimbledon on TV in 1975 when Arthur Ashe won. Since then, I've watched it ever since. Some years more games then others. Apart from a few years when Henman was good, but lacked that winning instinct in big games, we've not had a prayer of a British winner. We used to get excited when Jeremy Bates reached the second week FFS. It's a truly historical win and should be enjoyed for it may not come around again for many many years. Although I have a feeling this won't be Andy Murray's only Wimbledon title.....
Absolutely brilliant peformance - you can only admire the fitness, stamina and concentration levels of both men. Playing with such intensity for 3 hours in 40 degree heat takes some doing. Well done Andy, also to the British Lions who were awesome on Saturday. Just need to stuff the Aussies in the ashes and it will prove to have been a golden summer for the British Isles!
Fair play to him, he gets slagged off far too readily in this country. Personality wise, Henmen had far less. And as for saying he wasn't going to support England at the world cup- well it's a non story. He's Scottish ffs! It's a rivalry, so why would he?
I'm putting a tin hat on here, but it is a genuine question. Didn't he need to train abroad (America) and have foreign coaches (Lendl etc) at his and his parents personal expense because we just don't have the facilities or resources here?
I'm no tennis fan, but i think most them do that now. I think the majority of the Eastern Europeans move to US Camps when they were quite young.
I don't doubt that for a minute, I'm more asking if it's something Britain should really be proud of, or if it's in fact even a British achievement.
It's an achievement by Murray. If he'd lost, he'd have lost alone. (All the w*nkers would have moaned at him).
Of course it's a British achievement - Murray was the person who won it. Not Lendl, or any of the other coaching staff, but Murray.
In effect, I'm arguing the lack of resources in this Country makes Murrays achievement even greater. I'm questioning if it's a British achievement as opposed to an achievement by a Brit.
