Player stabbed, referee dismembered over soccer quarrel in Brazil (CNN) -- The argument started over a red card. It escalated when the referee fatally stabbed the player. It ended when the player's enraged family members stoned the referee to death and dismembered his body. Even for soccer, where violent outbreaks are all-too-common, what happened last week in a northern Brazil village was extraordinary. Referee Jordan Silva called a foul during a soccer match. He showed player Josenir Santo Abreu a red card, the highest penalty, which translates into expulsion from the game. Abreu, 30, wasn't going to take it, police said, and confronted the referee, who was 10 years younger. The altercation grew ugly. Silva pulled a knife, and plunged it into Abreu's chest, Maranhao state police said in a statement. While the player was rushed to a hospital, members of his family nabbed the referee and tied him up with the help of fans, CNN affiliate Band News reported. And they tortured him. The player didn't make it to the hospital alive, police said. When the news reached his family back at the soccer field, the mob took retribution on Silva. They stoned him to death. And they cut his body into pieces. Police later identified the suspects, easily. They could be seen clearly in video images of the gory incident recorded with a cell phone.
They put his head on a spike too. Hard to feel sorry for the ref when he was the one who started it. apparently pictures are out there but I wouldnt recommend looking for them.
Damn the World Cup is going to be interesting. Can you imagine being a fan of the team that beat brazil? Run forest run!
I recall when they banned English teams from international matches - I wionder if there has ever been a World Cup wiithout a "home" side
It's the Brazilian version of the global Head and Shoulders ad campaign ... Joe Hart did our UK version
I don't find these flippant remarks amusing. When I read this story I was just appalled at what human beings are capable of doing to one another.
Then my friend you may as well be prepared to get appalled each and every day of your life because worse things are happening today yet its made the news because it's a football story. I am appalled by that fact and the people who eat it and get all affected by it.... **** all anyone can do about it You may choose to call me flippant but I have chosen to laugh these things off ... why? because there is nothing you can do about it apart attempt to write a righteous remark about how dreadful things are on football forum. Sir I can assume you i have shred real tears about the horror of man and wouldn't hesitate to step in on any occasion where injustice is done ... its called life and this story is all about two murders that is all and IMO when you die you die ... how a person dies of course will always be terrible to some but not to me. I find everything funny ... I have to because of my story ... When i hear stories like this two brutal murders of course it opens eyes and chills you but it's a story and from that we are all allowed to make comments either way ..no problems here. The way this story is like a horror show that people can't handle because it a beheading ... good quick way to go IMO as it sounded like he deserved it IMO ... What effects me is the real stories hidden on the news where people are being killed slowly by preventable disease or social engineering ... there lies the areas to get appalled at and even try and fight to so something about it! ... Two deaths in football match don't weigh up to much more than a laugh in my book however horrible or gruesome the details .. in fact that is only difference of the sensationalism involved here ... I have seen the same passion put out to Bosingwa ... A wild pack will always react .. its nature
Surely it's the very fact of the wild pack behaviour that is so disturbing, not the beheading element, which happened post mortem. It may be nature to less sentient beings, but I still find it shocking when I am reminded that humans have not progressed as much as we might hope. To bring it back to football, and your reference to Bosingwa - I too was uncomforable with his treatment by our fans at the Newcastle game as I don't believe in booing your own players, but I blame Redknapp for picking him in the first place.
With great respect Dave, if you trawl the Internet and the many 'Gore' sites on it, you will find that beheading really ain't a nice and quick way to go. (I do agree with a lot of the sentiments in your post though)
They are still alive 15-20 seconds after their head has gone so they would see a revolving world as their head tumbles. however this guy was stoned to death which could be just as bad, I think the beheading and quartering was done after he was dead.
Wow, how was this information about still being alive gleaned? Asking a head as it rolled away...no that wouldn't work no lungs to push air through the vocal cords....you may be right but unprovable I think, and alive doesn't equal conscious. DT is of course right overall, but some things are still shocking. The sheer stupidity of everyone involved takes some beating in this case, Darwin awards all round.
I've actually seen the video from the hospital, the head is cut clean off and the limbs are "dislocated" from the joints. Not a nice scene
I assume the eyes can still follow something, maybe they did it on animals. I remember reading about it about a year ago but its not the sort of subject is want to look into further.
