So every one was saying we need wingers (myself included)!!

Yesterday we played a diamond formation in both halves and this formation was used by McDermott last season although mainly due to lack of wingers - so perhaps this will be our formation for next season?? Unless we sign some wingers in which case McD may revert to a more traditional 4-4-2...

I think it would be good to sign at least one winger (left) and Green/Byram/Hall could fill in on the right wing (I believe Murphy has even played there for Crewe) - so this would give us the option to change formation depending on the game.

Whether we start with wingers or not is irrelevant as far as I can see - we'd be mad not to have one or two in the squad, just for options and potential game changers. Look at Spain - when they can't pass their way through, they stick Navas on out wide and just let him run. We have nobody who could do that (Except maybe White...but don't get me started on him deficiencies <laugh> )

If we're playing a diamond in midfield then I think maybe a winger or two and we're good there. Need to work on the defence now <ok>

    Agreed :)

White has the legs of a sprinter but unfortunately he's a bit of a headless chicken!!

Just need to make the overall squad more dynamic to give us options in games and desperately need to tighten up at the back.

    Kenny
    Peltier Lees Pearce Warnock

    Byram Murphy Austin Poleon

    Smith McCormack

This wouldn't be too shabby a starting XI tbf, with Hunt, Green, Tonge etc on the bench

For me we still need to get a couple of dedicated wingers. Definitely if we want to play 4-4-2, for too long we've been making do with players who "can do a job there" rather than having out and out pacey wingers.

As was said above even if we keep the diamond a game changing option is always good to have. While we have a couple of players who have the pace (white and Byram spring to mind) I'd still rather see a proper wing option sitting in the bench in that situation too.

It's the formation Brian's been using since he took over because we have no wingers. It's good to have it in the locker, but I suspect we will get a couple of wingers in and mainly play a fluid 4-2-3-1/4-4-2 with McCormack in the hole.

Guess its all down to finances and how much dead wood we can shift. It may be that he can get a winger and make do with another player on a wing if it means getting a quality central defender for example. Be great to get 2 real quality wingers though as we have had too many square pegs in round holes for too long (Varney on the left and White on the right)
