Keiren Westwood admits he would have had to leave Sunderland this summer had Simon Mignolet stayed on Wearside.

And Republic of Ireland man Westwood says he was prepared to take a pay cut and drop into the Championship in a bid to revive his stalled career after two years as understudy to rising star Mignolet.

Westwood’s lack of action – he made only three Capital One Cup appearances last term – meant he lost his place as Ireland’s first-choice keeper, and the 28-year-old asked to leave on loan in January only to be told by then-boss Martin O’Neill that he had to stay.

It looked like Westwood would have to leave in search of first-team football this summer but instead it was Mignolet who moved on, with the Belgian making a £9m move to Liverpool.

And that has opened the door for Westwood to establish himself as Sunderland’s number one – assuming he can fight off competition from new £2m signing Vito Mannone – and launch a bid to win back his international place.

“I think the summer was going to be a bit of a crossroads for me,” said Westwood.

“I actually love it here, it’s a fantastic club and I get on great with everybody. I’ve got a lot of good friends here.

“It would have been a wrench to leave, but on the other side of it, I have to think of my career.

“I want to play. Everybody knows I want to play. It’s not in my nature to sit on the bench.

“I would rather go and play for a Championship team on less money and play every week, just so I get that buzz on a Saturday.

“Sitting on the bench in the Premier League and picking up money is not my desire or attitude. It’s a trap I don’t want to fall into.”

I hope Steve Harper reads that.
That softens the blow of Ming leaving knowing that Westwood wouldve gone. Either way we were going to lose a top keeper and Ming was the one that gave us the biggest transfer fee!

Always liked the lad thought he was unlucky not to be number 1. I think he will not let anyone down and will soon become a cult hero with the fans, especially with the attitude he has portrayed.
