    Was it down today?

Pretty poor considering it's the first day, would've thought they would have anticipated a flood of new users.

Looks like not606 is no.1 right now!

Even if they get in back up and running the damage has been done.

I was going to use ja606 over not606 because of the cloned set-up but I've already gotten used to not606 and will now stay here as at least I know it won't crash everytime it's busy.

Aah! I'm glad it wasn't just me then, thats where I was heading first and just couldn't get it. When I first saw ja, my first thought was if the Beeb would do anything about the carbon copy of their site format, dunno. Seems to have alot of issues atm though.

The server will have crashed from too many hits. It was getting traffic of well over 3,000 hits a day even before 606 closed down, that would have quadrupled when 606 finally closed. The server, unless it was ready for that increase in volume, simply would not have been able to handle it.

If the guys who set it up could have done it properly, they would probably have taken at least 90% of 606's traffic. The site would have been worth a fortune.

As it is, I agree with CroatiaHotspur, that the damage has probably already been done.

Exactly the same here. But seeing as this can actually cope, I can't be bothered with a site that cannot deal with a slight influx of users

I joined ja to keep an eye on it, but I was never in love with the BBC format and the moderation stifled more good debates and increased the WUM traffic. This is a far far better set up IMO where adults can discuss in freedom.

It's a long time since I needed Aunty to look after me and make sure I didn't hear bad words. The limits here and the exclusion of racism are about right IMO. The boring get modded here I'm all for that!

The setup here is great, no need to wait stupid amounts of time for mdoeration, or the whole 2 and a half minutes before posting, just a nice 30s limit

    I agree, Spurf.

Some of the so-called WUMs on 606 were actually very good. They were modded, not because they deserved it, but because their arguments (a lot of it expressed in jest) was too close to the truth to be comfortable for some fans. As you say, that killed a lot of the debate.

In contrast, some of the silly and more juvenile WUMs were permitted to infect the site with their inanity. One grew especially tired of the petty name-calling.

Also, what was so offensive about the word "tool"? How is that any worse than "muppet" or "clown"? I was forever perplexed by the Beeb's list of no-no words and expressions. Many was the time when I had written an article, only to find publication blocked because I had used a word that the Beeb didn't like; but search as hard as I might I could never find out which one was causing the offence. Needless to say, I would eventually, after much experimentation with the wording of my article, discover the "problem" word, even though I had used the word in its correct non-offensive context.

    Ah, well. It's gone, now.

Let's keep the Spurs site Wum free. They are a waste of space. So far I have not felt the need to visit another team's board and probably won't. I'm happy for debate on this board and cobblers to the other team's supporters.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of healthy debate from a fan of another team and I used to make the odd comment on other club's boards and will probably continue to do so on here, but the moderation on 606 was just stupid.
Good articles were deleted and sensible users were banned for retaliating to idiocy, while obvious WUMs and trolls went untouched.

Even the feedback thread was closed because they couldn't handle the WUMs from the Spurs board! <laugh>
    Ridiculous.

What fascinated me was the over-sensitivity of the 'Pool and City fans. The number of articles/posts I have pulled because I dared to pointed out to 'Pool fans that the vast majority of their glory was now of merely historical significance. No rude words, no personal insults, good solid references to accurate stats, but still I was viewed as a WUM. And yet, it was perfectly okay for 'Pool idiots to spout their endless drivel-infected taunts at United fans for having dared to be the dominant force in English football since the late 80s.

I keep hearing rumours that ja606 was hacked! If so that's a pretty underhand tactic to gain members for another forum perhaps. Over at 12 yards they're saying it's a hacking, seems a bit of a coincidence to have happened on the same day 606 died.

Nah, it'll definitely be an overloading of the server. JA606 was very slow even before BBC606 closed. JA's traffic would have gone way over the scale for the site's server.

It's nothing but very poor planning by the site owner.

Just typed in ja606 to google to find out what the problem was.

I don't have twitter but you can read this anyway http://twitter.com/#!/JA606

Apparently its a DDOS attack - anyone know what that means?

    Cheers <cheers>

I genuinely wish they would hurry up and not be hacked so people would stop posting all over the boards about them <whistle>
