Article: Can other promoted teams follow Southampton's example? Football Southampton

I was just getting hacked off with the negativity elsewhere, it was missing from this one so I thought I would level things up a bit.

 

To be frank, I'd saying Swansea's example is more credible as of now. We haven't survived second season blues yet but they did and some, by winning a trophy and qualifying for Europe.

 

Also our "template" isn't really one that other clubs can follow. We spent £30 million in the summer prior to our first season, mainly on players with no prior experience of playing in the division we had just been promoted to and sacked the manager who got us to the Prem and replaced him with an unknown quantity in England.

FWIW I think we bought well and Pochettino is a good manager, just that I don't think its exactly the best template to follow for a promoted club.

 

It raises the question though whether you need to spend £30m to survive?

 

Probably not, but it helps.

 

When Saints were promoted to the PL, Cortese said that Southampton FC would never be relegated as long as he was running things. Spending £30M reasonably well was a way of making sure that he wasn't going to be wrong at the end of first season. He's made certain promises along the way, and so far they've pretty much all come to pass. The £30M isn't just about survival. There are a few more promises to be kept.
