I remember reading a lot about Bill Hicks being this visionary, dark stand up... watched him and was pretty disappointed. Found a lot of it to be immature, over-acted, American style. Prefer George Carlin but he has some of the same flaws. Don't think they stand up to Gervais, Boyle, Stewart Lee etc for dark/insightful commentary.
I find it hard to enjoy Yankee stand ups. The humour isn't as easy to understand, not to say we English are dumb but it's far more enjoyable when you can relax to comedy and not have to understand the ethics and politics behind every ironic gag. Give me Mack and Manford any day.
I've seen all of those comedians being dire. In fact, Lee's bit on Tom o'Connor is exactly like Hicks' Goat Boy: a bit too long with too few jokes. But when Hicks was on it, as he was when I first saw his first Edinburgh festival gigs, he was among the best there's ever been. Fact.
