Our identity is what defines us and makes us recognizable. When you think of a club you think of their kit and colours. When you think of Chelsea you think blue, when you think of Madrid you think white, when you think of Sunderland you think red and white stripes, when you think of Man City you think sky blue, when you think of Barcelona you think purple and red..etc

for reference, ten years before stripes became the theme, 86 years of uninterrupted stripes, nine years of something different (which is probably when the majority of the people who don't see a problem and/or don't like stripes were growing up), 21 years of stripes again before the wonderful 125th anniversary kit.

i bet that doesn't add up.

I hoped for an Adidas variation of the '78 and '84 kits.
Both were great periods for The Saints - and Adidas already have perfect templates in place that they did for Fluminense, not so long ago.

Don't like the home kit, the white on the sleeves seems to make the shoulders look narrow ( weak ).
Black kit is BRILLIANT in my ever so humble opinion.
That's where my money will go :)

Looking forward to seeing the training range.

It didn't really strike me until this year just how much of a rip-off football shirts are (when you consider how they're made). You can't blame the club or Adidas for the stupid pricing though, when it's the fans who dictate the prices by ****ting out so much money on them every season.

I've only ever bought one, for the record.

    "Come on you Blacks"

    "B-L-A-C-K-S-S-S-S"

    Hmmmm.

Our away songs will be even more limited to mostly ones about the skates and the dirge version of OWTSGMI.

That's interesting, because I am 44 this year, and when I think Saints I think The Dell, a family 'type' club, that wonderful scene of yellow and blue at Wembley, continuity of manager (Ted bates and then Lawrie Mac), attacking flowing football with home grown players and some exciting big name signings. And of course I was brought up with red and white stripes. However, ever since an early age I knew that we weren't always red and white stripes, so even though it has been my upbringing and for the majority of years, I think stripes aren't everything and a year or two away from them isn't the end of the world.

I believe the identity of our club is not a kit, not one thing, one person, but a combination of many things from our past. I think it is made up of some of those things I've listed above; about big teams coming to the little old Dell and getting a spanking; about mini legends like the signing of Kevin Keegan at that little old club; about an England World Cup winning squad member who played over 700 games for us; about Mick Channon, Ron Davies; about a little second division team taking a map all the way to beating the mighty Man United in the Cup final; it's about the working men from oop North who started this team in the 1800's while working down here; it's about the players who played for us because they were stationed near us in the wars; it's about the hundreds of players that I know little about from before the 1970's.

But, do you know what? It's changed through all those years. We no longer have the crappiest little, beautiful ground called The Dell anymore (people want to debate a pissing football kit colour change and call that losing identity when we gave up that wonderful place ... which of course we had to); we no longer play in white with a red sash or white and red chequered shirts; we no longer wear blue shorts.... but oh let's cry the loss of our identity.

The identity of this team is in the heart of a Hampshire City. It's in my heart and we could wear blue and it would still be in my heart and under my skin. It didn't choose me, I happened to be born in Hampshire and was taken to that old ground and fell in love with the game, the atmosphere and the team and I'm just about fed up to the back teeth of a bunch of whinging, moaning spoilt brats who are trying to tell me that the identity of my team is based on the colour of its F'ing shirt.

    Get a grip.

Saints are saints. If you'd been born in 1899, you'd be mortified to see us wearing stripes.

True, but you'd still not be best pleased if your face were maimed with sulphuric acid for example.

of course, you'd have been very attached to the many different kits worn for ten out of the fourteen years before you were born and never again in your life time.

Bingo, so it's about what we are used to in reality then is it? People don't like change.

Wow. You really think that's a comparison? I was born with this face; the club wasn't started with stripes.

Anyone wanting to look at me and choose that as a representation of me, won't ever know the real me and who I really am. That is very shallow.
That comment only applies to what other supporters think and recognize us by and I don't give a damn about the other supporters.

I don't see a problem with not wanting change. I don't want to be a three foot tall mexican jewish woman with a limp either.

As long as it has a Saints badge on it, I don't care.

Besides, I haven't bought a replica kit since I turned 15 and got too old for them.

I wasn't born with the face I have now. I've seen the photos. I'd be surprised if you were.

For one thing, my face wouldn't fit on a baby. (that doesn't sound right)

It's the same. I've checked the DNA, no one has altered it, it's changed itself gradually over the years, but still got the same foundations it always had. There has been no new face, that I promise you. My mum knew it was me no matter what I did to it, spots, facial hair, even an 80's perm. She always knew it was me and loved me just the same; she said it didn't matter what I did to the outside I was still me ;)

And the saints kit had red and white foundations for the first ten years, eventually maturing into stripes.

It's what we're used to, it's the tradition. No tradition started at the big bang.

some who started their saints suport during the nine years of patrick kits will feel differently. It's understandable.

Not to fussed as long as its red and white, not really bothered how much of each colour is on the shirt. I'm more worried about what players we have wearing the shirt and how entertaining the football is we play. Although I would be a bit miffed if we had the eye sore Liverpool have ended up with next season.

I don't think there's any obligation to realise it, but it seems 15 is the age in question. congratulations to pieking for realising it in time.
