Huddlestone, under contract until 2015, is believed to be available for around £4-5m and Sunderland would have no problem with that fee. But former Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is also interested in the four-times capped Huddlestone and is hoping to gazump the deal. Bruceâs Hull City made contact with Huddlestoneâs representatives this week. But Sunderland are further down the line, having already held talks, and will hope to seal a deal regardless of Hullâs late interest. http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport...tottenham-midfield-star-huddlestone-1-5804842
Interesting turn up for the books; this will free up Cattermole I imagine. Don't think we'd have the clout to sign him would we? He'd always go to another club over us.
Wages and injuries are concerns over Huddlestone - but boy, can he pass a ball. He'd knit together our midfield brilliantly.
Well we would have spent an extra £5 million plus high wages so I doubt the owners would be as happy about spending a lot on strikers
True, if wouldn't affect the hunt but it would the scope and funds available from our not bottomless pit.
We have a fixed budget it isn't infinite. Every bit spent on one position clearly affects the possible signings on every other position. And John beat me to it.
We still need to bring in a grafter for midfield, Huddlestone going to Sunderland might free up Cattermole for us.
I know, and I have already said that wages would be a concern - but it's clear that Bruce does want one central midfielder, so it may as well be him. I'm just getting sick and tired of people throwing in comments like "Yes, but we need a striker" - a few "fans" wrote very similar comments on the club's Facebook page below its announcement of the excellent signing of Curtis Davies. It's like waking up to a day of glorious sunshine and muttering "Yeah, but I bet it'll bloody rain tomorrow."
Agreed. We're the first to slag of strikers when they dont score, however for the majority of the last 2/3 seasons they havent been getting the service (until Elmo and Brady). SB is doing it right by building from the back IMO.
Problem is, Sunderland want the same sort of money for Cattermole, as Spurs want for Huddlestone, which is possibly why we've been in touch. And it's true that the midfield signing won't affect the strikers, we need both and it will all be budgeted in, maybe we were trying to loan Huddlestone.
Think Huddlestone wouldn't be on as high wages as you'd think. He joined us at 17 and has had a few new contracts but he's never been a "key" first team player - I'd expect him to be on about 26-30k rather than the 40 suggested above. And to Jayc above - He may be on double Cattermole's wage but hes 3x as good
