That's not the way I remember it. I might be wrong but I thought it was good natured banter that he played along with. He really couldn't run off the pitch fast enough though, it was the quickest I ever saw him sprint! As for Nige, interesting to hear his comments. He played him every week, it wasn't as if he dropped him.
Ash's injuries took their toll on him both physically and mentally and yes it was sad the way it ended with City, but that's often the case in sport when someone has enjoyed so much success over such a long time. Nice to see him around the City and looking fit and well these days. The best captain this club has ever had.
'You fat bastard' He didn't seemed thrilled by it. As I recall it..... We'll never know the full story of what really happened.
Ash was One of the best captains, but there have been a few good ones, Jack Taylor(1946) Jock Davidson (19????) I can't remember all of them. Dutch MD will know.
Captained three promotion-winning sides including the one that was worth all the other ones put together.
As someone that saw Andy Davidson post 1966, I didn't feel he was ever that good albeit massively overshadowed by the fantastic forward line - also he never captained the side through three promotions to the top flight and on that basis no one comes close to Ash IMHO.
I think we'd all agree ash was a great captain and served the club fantastically well and still loves the club and the area. Unfortunatley we didn't get to show our appreciation, could us the supporters ask the club if we could do something, in not sure i mean a statue outside the ground but something that recognises what he achieved? How come he didn't get a testimonial ?
Didn't he start a business selling expensive sports watches to sports 'celebs' through Blowers of Savile Street?
yeah thats what i thought, he must have been referring to he'd been here for 13 years. He carnt have been far away from a testimonial though i think if he'd have got that extra year that would have been 10 years
What did you make of the question about who his favourite midfield partner was and someone said Richie Appleby, I couldn't work out if his response suggested an issue between them or it was just the fact Appleby never played
Many thanks for the link - just finished listening to it - Ash was well on form and sounded very content with life.
Ive recounted a brief tale on this topic a few times on here. I happened to be in Quayside one lunchtime midweek and in walked Ash, Dean Keates and someone else (I cant recall). They were eating together, socialising - the usual friendly colleague malarkey. And then in walked Appleby, clearly unannounced and had just been passing on his own and he tried to join them but Ash made it absolutely clear he didn't want him to join them. He literally couldn't have made him less welcome and Appleby skulked back out again. I took it at the time that Ash was pissed off with his malingering and always suffering 'dubious' injuries. I particularly recall blisters.
