Interesting articles. I begin to understand why the Southern States have a somewhat jaundiced view of the North. Thanks for the insight.
My favourite terms of insult are the old classics from school (fraggle, nugget & beanpole) for example. Brilliant, timeless insults. Incidentally, does anyone ever feel so flat as when they've very simply, and without fanfare, been labelled a 'prat'? A simple word, often used by people like your Dad when you were 18, that bring you right down to earth without the fuss or bluster of stronger words. "You just don't understand me" "Prat" Owned.
It is a regional thing and even then it is a rural thing within that region. It is only going to be taken negatively in a very specific set of criteria. I have never heard of a Yankee burger chain but they do have a candle company called Yankee Candle. It isnt offensive because it doesnt fit any of the criteria to be offensive. We have the Yankees baseball team, but that also doesnt fit the criteria. It is not the same thing as saying the N word which is universally a highly offensive thing to say. Like I said before Yankee is not offensive in regular use. You all saying it is not offensive but there is a situation where it is offensive and in that situation it is what you would call "fighting words".
I was in Boston and recall seeing a statue with 'Brits Out'. I wasn't offended. It's what I expected. And it was nowt to do with the 'Tea Party' there.
There used to be a Bar in Boston that was famous for taking donations for the IRA. Lots of the funding for the IRA came from the Boston area. I do not know what statue you are referring to but I would guess that the statue is in reference to northern Ireland.
I urge all decent Hull City fans to go use dedicated sites for our club, not an off-shore site like this which seems to tacitally condone and encourage racist comments. Even the local news site (which is appaling in terms of news) is a better option than supporting a site that allows people to continually make comments which are unacceptable to decent people. Cheers.
Didnt know that. Is there a section of London that has a high % of people of Irish decent? That is the reason for the boston connection.
There are several and it has varied over the decades. Some are Cricklewood, Hanwell, Kilburn. Don't know now how it is down there. Once upon a time there were a lot of Irish labourers down there, now they mainly EU migrants. The Irish economy has been a real rollercoaster in the last 15 years- maybe they're heading to the States again now looking for work?
So, is it decided then, we're going to be called Hull ****s from now on? Obviously, Hull ****s Association Football Club (Tigers) Ltd would be our formal name.
