NEWCASTLE UNITED’s new director of football, Joe Kinnear, has launched a stinging attack on Alan Shearer and defended his own record in football after a week in which the club were widely ridiculed over his appointment.

In his first newspaper interview since getting the job, Kinnear, a former Ireland international, told The Sunday Times how the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley had turned to him and he revealed details of his meetings during the week with key Newcastle figures, including the manager Alan Pardew. He also apologised to Newcastle fans for derogatory remarks made during a radio interview last Monday, but the conciliatory tone ended when it came to Shearer.

The former Newcastle number nine, who holds the club and Premier League goalscoring records said last week that “right now people are laughing at the football club I support” and added the players were “downtrodden” when he took over briefly as manager in 2009 after Kinnear had suffered a heart attack. Kinnear has now hit back.

“What Shearer says is diabolical. This is a guy who hasn’t got a clue about coaching. Good in five a sides, though, so they tell me. The last game of the season he came up with the master idea of playing Damien Duff at left back. Damien is one of the best left wingers in the business, but can’t tackle. And we went down with an own goal from Damien. Shearer keeps slagging me off. He is being disrespectful to me, but I am entitled to fight back.”

Kinnear also revealed he had a meeting with Pardew at a hotel in central London on Wednesday in which they discussed their roles. “He was looking for clarification about my role, not his own, and I explained my role to him in full,” Kinnear said. “I said you are on an eight-year contract and my role is to support you and give you the best help possible. I have been informed that you found it difficult last season to speak to Mike or get messages to Mike about various things. I made it clear that I am not after his job.”

Kinnear has also had a meeting with Graham Carr, the Newcastle chief scout, who came to his house last Monday to wish him well. “I have known Graham for about 20 years. There were rubbish stories that he was looking over his shoulder. This is the negativity I have had to face and hopefully it is behind me.”

With Pardew on holiday, Kinnear will meet Carr again tomorrow after he and the manager identified that the club urgently needed a striker and a centre-half. “Alan decides who the centre forward is going to be. We have three lined up. Then, when the transfer window shuts it’s back down to football and nothing else but results. I’m not going to interfere, but if I see something I am not going to be shy to say it.”

Kinnear also apologised to Newcastle fans after saying in a radio interview last week that they were “talking out of their backsides”.

“It is my own fault and I regret what I said about the supporters. I have a fiery nature and I sometimes lose the plot. There are 10% I’m never going to win over, that is the point I was trying to make, but I regret what I said and if I offended any Newcastle fans I apologise.”

Kinnear, 66, was Newcastle manager for a five-month period in the 2008/09 season, at the end of which Newcastle were relegated. He has kept in contact with Ashley, a near neighbour in north London.

    since Kinnears 'self appointment'
I have wondered greatly about his interview on Talk Sport
and I have a sneaky feeling that Mike Ashley was behind the scenes.

I mean Kinnear in his interview, got so many peoples names wrong, even the guy who he had to speak too every day when he was manager
c'mon, you don't get the name wrong of the most important person at the club at that time which was Llambias
not to mention getting Ameobi's name wrong a player that played under him...

to me this has been a wind up from the start with Ashley,
as he's not one to shy away from 'weird bets' with people he knows, -(Llambias running across St. James Park naked)
It wouldn't surprise me if Ashley had bet Kinnear in some sort of way to see how many mistakes he could make in his first interview

when you have as much money as Ashley has, you'll find it hard to entertain yourself unless it's at someone else's expense

Ashley doesn't have to worry about entertaining himself, I'll gladly be his Director of Entertaintment.

    Anagram of Joe Kinnear......Inane Joker.....<laugh>

That's just for starters and there's plenty more where that came from.

    Kinnear or Shearer?

It's a no brainer to me.

Good way to get the fans onside, slating our hero.

He's here now and I guess we'll have to deal with it. All I ask is for him to shut up and get on with his job. Sign the bloody centre back and striker and stop talking **** to the press.

If he hates the press so much why does he even talk to them? What a muppet

Within 2 days of the club confirming Kinnear's appointment, my company had a restructure and now my job (along with many others) is "at risk"! Bloody Kinnear. Oh and I stubbed my toe yesterday! It's all his fault. <grr>

What else has happened to anyone since Kinnear joined?

All my donkeys went down and I got a splinter in my finger.

    It's all JK's fault!

    And Pardew's.

That would look better than, "Agent Bruce must spread some Reputation around before giving any to me again."

Whoa whoa, quick tug of the reins there. As you know I can forgive Pards for anything.

Did any one watch the boxing last night? The after fight interview with grade A A-hole Adrian Broner was entertaining. Claiming to have beat Paulie M left with his belt an his girl. This sparked an angry response from Malinaggi running across the ring to take the bait and telling Broner not to talk about his "sidepiece" Americans eh <doh>

    Good work. <ok>

Unfortunately .............. You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Obi Wan again.

To be honest I partly agree with Kinnear in that Shearer didn't know what he was doing, however I wouldn't blame Shearer as he tried to save us. I'm partly glad that we were not salvageable at that time.

No person is bigger than the club and Shearer out lived his time here in my opinion in playing terms. As for Shearers being renamed and the uproar - every time I go in to Shearers it is empty. Calling it Nine I think is a better name and is symbolic, still doubt people will go, but shows that its not about one person. If it is going to be about one person it should always be Sir Bobby.

Only think Kinnear is being a dick about Shearer is that he feels as if Shearer lay the blame on Kinnear at the time, which although partly true was again harsh as I think it was all down to the players.

Kinnear should be banned from the media though!

I'm now listening to the talksport interview, and to be honest, Kinnear just states he's there to replace DL. Director of football is a misleading title though, and ill chosen. At the same time, yes he shouldn't be talking to the press because he can't control himself.

    Agree! <ok>

He's making the whole situation seem far worse. If he'd keep his mouth shut and actually give Pardew & Carr the wholehearted support he says he will, then things might be OK.

Or if he really does want to be in the media limelight, then he should at least get some PR etiquette lessons from our poster 'Beardsley's Rancid Sack' first. <ok>
