Great stuff, BD. Probably the greatest football picture of all time. The Belgian players appear as gazelle before a prowling lion.
82 was the best by a mile, Brazil were the best team I have seen to this day even though they didn't win it. 84 Euros was the 2nd best comp.
Biggus, I've been up since 4am and watched that film, wonderful, very interesting and moving. Thanks for the tip.
I used to love the BBC theme tune for the Mexico '86 world cup, but the music possibly hasn't aged as well as I thought it would http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW-rypZLHsQ
My favourite was probably 1974, the Scotland squad was as good a one as has ever been put together in the whole British isles but unfortunately naivety (and some skulduggery http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/hi/history/newsid_1993000/1993333.stm) cost Scotland their best ever chance of doing well at the World Cup. Had Scotland got through perhaps they could even have won it. When they got knocked out me and all my mates started following Poland who were probably the best footballing side. Great memories.
That's awful, the ITV one was better if I recall?
98 france was my favourite - me and two mates made a road trip out of the whole thing. Essentially it was Fear and Loathing in Frogland. Tried horse tranquilisers for the first and only time. Kept away from the ether. Had a gun pulled on us by a mad fellow of arab descent. Wrecked my pals dads car. Fell out with the tartan army knobs when we pretended we were arranging a fight in the main square in Tour ( I think it was ) abetted by some Danish chums we had made along the way who were in on the prank. Destroyed a beer tent as we removed the weights holding it in place in order to demonstrate the art of curling to the locals, etc etc, too many escapades to mention. Football was fairly incidental.
Thankfully can't remember 66 , though do remember 1970 england 2-0 up against Germany in quarter final and got beat 3-2 , 74 ,memory was the final , jack Taylor the English ref got the final , how many times did the commentators mention him ???78 , we were favourites to win it !!! Until we played our first game against Peru , Roughie had a mare .82 Hansen and Miller running into each other , 86 Strachans goal in the heat against Germany . 90 two Celtic players scoring in the opening match against Brazil ( ok one was an og)94/98/02/06/10 happy watching the English believe they would win it and fail miserably , the highlight being penalty shoot out against Germany
In 1990, we opened the whole thing by playing Brazil, with 2 Celtic players scoring? Obviously, I am not a footballing guru like yourself, but I am pretty sure that our opening game in 1990 was against Costa Rica. Another point, England weren't even in the 1994 world cup and why were you wanting England to fail in 1998, when you could have easily been supporting Scotland instead? Just saying like...
'arry does come across as more interested in England failing than Scotland winning which is kinda sad.
Sorry , 90 should have been 98 , the state of Scottish of football at the moment ,what other options to we have than wanting England to fail ???
