Legendary Country Music singer, Otis Dewey "Slim" Whitman dies at age 90. I remember seeing him at City Hall in the mid 50's after his recording of "Rose Marie" topped the charts for almost 3 months. http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jun/19/local/la-me-slim-whitman-20130620
A decent artist in his day, he survived the onslaught of Rock n Roll to preserve his fan base although some people just don't like country music. RIP Slim.
A favourite of my mother she took me to see him at Blackpool in my mid-teens. My husband saw him in Hull in the 50's but does not remember the venue being Hull City Hall. Whitman came to Hull on a farewell tour in 2002 and appeared at the New Theatre so that may be confusing him. Also he went to see another "Yodeller" in Hull in the fifties called Frank Ifield( Australian). Slim Whitman's 'Rose Marie' topped the charts for a record 11 weeks in the UK for a long time. For Hull music 'Buffs' what recording had held the previous record of 10 weeks at No1? RIP Slim.
Hulls own David Whitfield with Cara Maria whose house Mr Allams daughter now lives in. The house is also called Cara Maria.
The house might be called 'Cara Maria', but the song was:
