our crest is magic. I don't think we should have a Latin strapline, but maybe a hampshire one...."i got a brand new combine arvester..."
You get so many that are changed, I bet it would be turned into a round circle shape like everyother crest and you wouldn't be able to recognise it, however ours stands out from the rest
It's jolly, friendly, and looks like it was drawn by a child. Instantly recognizable. On the advert for the competition about football shirts, it's upside down and you can still recognise it at a glance.
It was designed by a Saints fan in 1973 (or there abouts). Can't remember his name, but it was the result of a competition.
It does make you wonder what the losing designs looked like! Can't remember what any previous crest looked like...anyone got a link?
It was the centre shield part of the Southampton City Crest. Although I think it only appeared on one or two season shirts in a hit and miss fashion, hence the competition in 1973 to come up with an official club emblem please log in to view this image
Would have quite liked the central shield with the roses standing alone, but doesn't suggest either a football club or Southampton in particular. Our present crest is really a child of the seventies and does tell you exactly what it's about. If our crest was going to change dramatically it would have been done when ML took over. Doubt it will happen now.
Our crest is unique in its complicated simplicity, I like it. I thought the motto was "Dieu et mon droit" = God and my right.
