Suspected heart attack according to the BBC.

I love The Sopranos, it has to be one of the best TV series of all time; superbly directed, acted, scripted and staged. For anyone who has not watched it Sky Atlantic seem to have it pretty much on a loop although getting in at the beginning is clearly best. you will not be disappointed.

The mobster character in The Simpsons was clearly based on Tony Soprano, can TV offer higher praise?

    RIP James Gandolfini <rose>

    You are ****ting me right?
Can we ever say the Sopranos was ever acted above a 3 in a scale of 10 ?

I put it below the wooden tops

Dreadful stuff the characters were IMO laughable. The series was successful and gave a lot of people entertainment which is good to hear but I hated it

The actor bloke who has died made that role his own for sure but I think that was it IMO ... He played a general in a war film or something and ruined that

    That's entertainment

Great actor, enjoyed a lot of his work. Very young to die RIP.

Not sure about this Roller, I think Fat Tony was around way before the Sopranos (I'll look it up).

Having lived in New Jersey I'd say the characters were pretty much on the button(not that I met high ranking mobsters)!
I will be only drinking expresso & eating cannolis today!

He played a general in the comedy in the loop and thought he was pretty good in it!!

Regardless of what you think of the show itself, it has paved the way for so many shows since, such as the wire, breaking bad and game of thrones, and very much shifted writers interests from hollywood movies to blockbuster tv.

A great talent who will sorely missed

'The Sopranos' was great.......but 'Game of Thrones' is far better IMO

Liked Gandolfini in '8mm', played his part very well

I totally disagree (except Miami Steve, I'll give you him).

New Jersey thugs are not going to have panache to spare. I heard an interview on the radio recently by some author (name escapes me) who was fed up with serial killers being portrayed as charismatic eccentrics, the same must be true of mafia hoods. These people rose to their position by being more violent than the next gangster and this is how they were portrayed.

Are you really going to tell me that Junior wasn't acted brilliantly, or Richie Aprile?

    I could go on.

IMO I hated it and have commented on the acting and story lines which were dreadful and not original IMO.

So can i offer better .. that's not hard at all ...

Nothing ... nothing has ever come close to Twin Peaks ... it is still regarded as the best most influential TV series ever made plus the follow up film Fire walk with me at last in now considered by the people who gave the industries respect as one of the best films of modern times.

Lynch/Frost then the Coens have at last now got the masterpiece titles they deserve.

If you haven't dared then do it and buy the box set and films: After that The Sopranos etc may seem a little dull ... they keep trying to bring something new but the master has the keys. Ask the woman with the log

In my opinion, in comparison to The Sopranos, Twin Peaks was just a zany soap opera.

I know that everybody has right to his/hers opinion and somebody likes a daughter while somebody likes a mother.....Even so i cant understand that someone prefers twin peaks over sopranos. Soprano was magnificent serie with great actors in superb characters. After promising start twin peaks was just bad dream with acid.......
James Gandolfini was just convinsing in his role. RIP.

Couldn't disagree with you more strongly Dave.

The Sopranos was, without doubt, the greatest TV ever made imo.
Maybe you only saw the last series, which was the only one where they let themselves down a bit, with the dream sequences after Tony was shot by Junior.
It won 21 Emmys and 5 Golden Globes.
Fantastic writing, brilliantly acted and all held together by Gandolfini's fantastic performance as a ruthless, savage and yet incredibly funny and family minded mob boss.

    RIP!

Whatever your view of 'The Sopranos', and I thought it was a great series, 51 is way too young to go. His son must be devastated to have witnessed it...

The screen writers guild recently voted it best scripted tv series of all time.

I personally think it was top notch.

I watched a couple of episodes but couldn't get into it and couldn't see what all the fuss was about, but accept that many people regard it very highly indeed. Anyway I'm all mobbed out with godfather this and cosa nostra that so I'm not too gone on the subject matter. I saw him in something else where he had some woman hostage and he performed well, can't remember it though. RIP

The Governor of New Jersey had the flags flown at half-mast today in tribute.
If you have ever been to "Joisey", you would know how deeply affected they are by a mob bosses' passing, real or fictional.
