I stated mcgregor had signed last nite, i also asked the question about why we,d still go for schmeics if we,d signed mcgregor, was told trying to get both
A third of our transfer budget spent on two keepers, neither of which will be interested in coming in as a No.2? That's beyond unlikely.
If it is true that the clubs are £500k apart in the valuation of the player, we should meet that half way and add £250k for our next bid.
Would happily take Mellberg, every team needs a plaer with a cool beard, so if not pirlo, Olof's alright! Cant see their being any truth in the Carlton Cole rumour, wages too high for our structure, especially when he's hardly even a goal scorer. And in response to tommytiger we are never going to be spending in excess of £20m, I would imagine the quoted £15m to be fairly accurate.
I always thought he was a central defensive midfielder?! Well we have Faye who's our experienced defender; I think having 2 over the age of 35 isn't necessary.
We'll see, but if Austin, McGregor and Davies come in for their rumoured prices, then that's just over £8m on just 3 players. We want a back up goalkeeper, another 2 strikers (if Cole comes on a free fair enough), a midfielder and a winger, will we get all those for £7m? Then what about January? Are we going to by pass the transfer window and just get loans in? I doubt it. I'm not saying it's the right way to go about it, spending loads of money, but it looks like it's going to happen by proxy and when we get to the point where we've spent £14m, people shouldn't be worrying that there's only £1m left. EDIT: If you add on the £2m for Elmohammady, that's over £10m spent if they all come off and we're still in June.
Last time we wanted Austin, 500k was enough to make the difference between getting him and Aaron McLean. So yes it is a big stumbling block.
But didn't CMS go for something like £4m in the end? We overpaid for McLean, but it's only in hindsight that he didn't live up to his pricetag. He was a decent goalscorer for Peterborough in League 1 and I think that's where he'll end up.
It was actually only £200k, we paid £1.3m for Mclean and Austin went for £1.5m. CMS went for £2.5m(£3.25m with add-on's, which won't have been met, as they haven't been promoted).
I agree with you, to fill all those positions which undoubtedly need strengthening would cost that much, however I would be very surprised to see them all filled. Id imagine our shopping to go roughly as follows; McGregor - £1.8 Back up GK - £1.5 Davies - £2.5 Elmo - £2m Austin - £4.5 Which equates to just over £10m, add another key signing (likely forward) for around £4-5m then after that I cant see any more money being spent, any other positions to be covered by potential freebies or loans i.e. McGugan, Henriquez
But even loans have fees attached to them, which vary depending on the player and contract situation (see George Boyd as an example). The thing is, you get what you pay for and SB knows that we need quality to help us avoid the drop. I honestly think that with the additions we've been linked with, we would have a great chance of staying up and if needs be we can strengthen in January with anybody who's set the Championship alight.
That is true however I cant see a few loan deals adding an extra £5-7m to our spending. Away from the argument, like you said I too believe that the squad is shaping up to be one that can survive in the league if these rumours become reality. We certainly seem to be making the most positive moves out the three promoted sides.
Agreed. Sorry Hutch but I don't find your 'source' convincing and haven't done since January when Fraizer Campbell was definitely coming for a £600k loan fee or something and then it turned out we hadn't even made an offer for him because he'd made it clear he wasn't interested long before the window opened and he went to Cardiff on a permanent. This time you're saying we've signed a striker last night even though Papa knew nothing about it yesterday morning? Come on.
I though pappa said we were talking to strikers?? To be honest pappa knew a lot more than he was letting on so maybe we have signed a striker between his interview and last night
Cardiff already have the most Premier League quality players and have just had a bid of £8m accepted for Ince. As things currently stand, I think they're a bit ahead of us.
Liverpool have the option of matching the bid don't they? Whether they will or not is another matter obviously
