Fair enough, each to their own. I was commenting on the deal as a whole 15 mil + 100k pw + 6 year contract. Time will tell but really think he is very average. Average prem payer at best. Yeah he will score a few but cant ever see him making an impact at international level or european club level. In the long term his attitude off the pitch may continue to be a problem too. One hell of a risk for that kind of deal

the wages are ludicrous tipsy. i wouldn't pay him more than £25k a week and offer a decent bonus structure - keep him hungry.

I would worry that someone with his previous behaviour off the field being paid 100k. Could lead to more issues. Either way cant believe the financial risk they are taking with a 6 year contract. Must have been desperate to sign him

Its not so much the £15mil, but the whole package comes close to £50mil. If as supers said he was on closer to £30k pw, then that's manageable. If Arsenal were to sign Higuain or Jovetic for £21m and pay £80k pw, then you've got the same deal over a 6 year contract. I certainly don't think a deal like that for Jovetic is that unreasonable, and he's a vastly better player

its a bad deal but he's a good player. i think a lot of people have trouble separating the two. its not his fault that two clubs have paid unbelievably stupid amounts both in transfer fees (liverpool) and wages (west ham). just because he is overpriced does not make him automatically ****. he potentially is as good as drogba imo, maybe even better

No chance Pyjamas, his first touch is all over the place.

Drogba's control is very good for the style of player he is. Carroll on the other hand is pretty much limited to his physicality only which is why he's perceived (and rightly so) as ****, if your going to hit long balls to his head then he's great, but that does not make him a good player. He is an aerial target only. He's just a glorified Steve Morison.

Where as players like Drogba and Ibrahimovic have a genuine class to go with it, they are not aerial targets but players who can hold the ball up, pass and score very good goals.

Have to disagree there Supes, no way is his potential to be as good as Drogba. Even if Carroll fulfils his potential, Drogba will still be streets ahead. Drogba could shoot with both feet, his free kicks were(are) incredible and he could get immense power under control that Carroll can't. Drogba's touch, passing and technique were all miles ahead. Carroll possibly edges him with heading, but that's it. As you say, Carroll isn't a bad player, and for the right team could be very good, but you can't compare him to a player who was, for a season or two, the best in the world in his position and completely unstoppable.

there speaks a man who will never appreciate andy carroll's technique, simply because he isn't 5ft 8in. the guy may not be as gifted technically as ibrahimovic but he's just as much a handful. drogba's touch was abysmal at times but other times it was sublime - the same applies to carroll - he can be a bit hit and miss. his chest control is probably the best i have ever seen, and i do mean ever. he's one of the best headers' i've ever seen. so straight away, that's two aspects to his game which are probably unparalleled in the current game. he has a truly tremendous shot, so powerful - he can score all kinds of goals (shearer-esque in that respect - head, volley, long range, tap ins etc). his downfall is that he isn't mobile enough, his movement is stifled. how much of that is down to him or down to allardyce i don't know but there was a spell at liverpool where he was quite comfortably the best striker in the premier league - people have short memories! naturally, he isn't going to be everyones cup of tea but my god, he is a hell of a lot better than some would have you believe! i am not surprised west ham have been desperate to sign him up - i do think they are mad to pay him as much money as they are, but if he's playing week in, week out and playing well then i wouldn't be at all surprised to see another bid of £35m+ coming in for him one day.

Good point on the chest. And his left peg sure can blast it, but I maintain nowhere near as powerful as Drogba - certainly not regularly anyway.

As for his touch, no way is Carroll's touch on a good day anywhere near Drogba's - I vividly remember one touch when the ball came over Drog's left shoulder as he leapt in the air, at full stretch he cushioned it with his right foot. It was incredible. Carroll is miles behind.

As for whether he could be worth £35m one day - yeah possibly.

I have no idea what period you are referring to when he was comfortably the best striker in the Premier League, frankly it never happened.

Its not his chest control which is good its the fact he's out muscling people, that ball pings off his body, chest control is more than dealing with a punt up field. He doesn't roll the ball with his chest or take it whilst running at speed (like an Ibrahimovic can, who is even taller). When your taking a ball as slow as he is with less physical players contending for the ball its a darn sight easier to keep. He's only doing the easy stuff well. He doesn't have the best chest control I've ever seen.

When you say he scores sheareresque goals, that maybe true, but only because he hits it hard all of the time so when he eventually does score that's how it happens. That's where the similarities start and end, he's no Shearer. Carroll doesn't score from all positions like Shearer, he doesn't get them on target as much as Shearer, he doesn't score as many as Shearer. You can't just drop these names in just because he hits a ball hard like Shearer. He's nothing like him.

Your'e saying he's a handful which is true when you stick the ball up high, but your also saying he's a good player. I don't think thats true he's just bigger and stronger than the rest which is different in my book.

Got to say Im leaning toward Carrabuh on this. He will do ok. But essentially I just see him as a very average player.

Heard it all, Carroll best striker in the Premier League?

Anyway over rated players, my vote goes to Papiss Cisse. He's missed his fair share of sitters in his time, he does have some quality goals in his locker but I don't think he has much to his game without a strong forward next to him. Ba was his support.

Clearly it must be hair length. I'm fairly sure Van Persie did ok that year for one.

Can't get behind the shouts for Shevchenko or Cisse I must say!

Putting my 2 cents in on Carroll, I think he is a useful option for England and a good striker, but the massive pressure put on him by fees has hampered his career and he might never recover. His heading is, frankly, ludicrously good. Patchy currently, but I would say under rather than over-rated by the public.

Overrated - Ashley Cole. Best left back in the world? Really? Come on...
Rooney - what has he actually shown us in the last few seasons? I could score as many as he does in that Man U team...

Marc Janko - great with his head and hailed by some as a top striker but aside from jumping he can barely move.

look, carroll was only playing out of his skin for a two month period towards the end of the season but i watched him a number of times and he was as good as anyone in the top flight at the time. he got called up to the england squad for the euros on the back of that spell. my point throughout this is that too many fans jump on the bandwagon with a player like carroll - "he's ****; he's a donkey" etc. no he isn't, he's actually very talented. my comparison to shearer was not to compare goals scored - that would be hugely unfair on most strikers - but i've watched him score every type of goal - he had two entires on goal of the season last year, didn't he? one of them was a truly breathtaking piece of skill, taking the ball as it dropped behind two defenders and neatly cushioning a volley past the keeper. there will not be one west ham fan disappointed they've signed the guy because in the games he played for them, they saw just how good he can be. most liverpool fans are quite disappointed he's left and was never given a chance by rodgers. the people who have watched him regularly will tell you what i have. as bighairywinger points out above, carroll is hugely underrated by joe public, not overrated. my main issue with him is his attitude.

“He has technique. He has a presence. He has something special and is efficient. I have been hugely impressed by him. He has charisma, confidence and is intelligent with the ball.”

Arsene Wenger (can we assume he knows a thing or two about technique?), talking about Andy Carroll in 2012

Completely spot on, but I do still think he's a decent player. If I was a manager I wouldn't pay any more than £6m for him but I'd still have him in the England team. He gives us another dimension and will only get better. He's just the type of player we need to rough up international defenses when we're looking for a goal - I'd rather play with him than against him.
