I don't think it's as rigid as that. If we've spent £15m and then someone brilliant and young suddenly becomes available for another £2m I'm sure we'd sign him. I'm sure it isn't a mandatory rule or anything but managers seem to think being in the PL requires a third senior goalie, I don't know why that is.
You're right, it's not mandatory, but managers like to have 3 keepers because if the first team goalie picks up an injury/is away on International duty (if the keepers nationality is a bit obscure and therefore might get called up outside of an international break, like Al-Habsi or any African goalkeepers), then they like to have another senior keeper as back up just in case, rather than rely on an untested youth player. Arsenal have Wojciech Szczęsny, but also Fabianski and Mannone on their books. After that, there's Martinez (who's ****e) and Shea, who apparently Wenger really rates. If you apply it to us, we now have McGregor (hopefully), we'll probably bring in a back up goalie like Forde or Moore and then we have either Jakupovic or if he's let go, we'll need a third choice goalie if Oxley goes out loan and Cracknell is a bit off the first team yet (although it looks like Bruce rates him as he was on the bench a couple of times last year).
It might be to do with PL clubs not able to loan outside of the transfer window. Keepers do seem to pick up injuries too.
If we survive by the skin of our teeth in 2013-2014 then we will have the same difficulty attracting players for 2014-2015. If we are safe with three matches to go we will be in a lot better position to get players without overpaying.
I think it was just that. He'll probably go to a bigger club than us. Mind you, I wouldn't mind taking Matt Phillips off their hands; I don't think he'd cost as much (I know Palace were quoted £15m for both, but I don't think Phillips will cost £7.5m)
Seems he was right with this one too. Just inboxed me now, He's seeing his source tonight so should have some updates, But apparntly its looking great on the transfer front whatever that could mean..............................
I'll say, with Elmo done by the end of the week, that's two solid players brought in for £2m; excellent business and with McGregor to come, we still won't have spent more than £4m.
I'm guessing he's a midfielder, winger maybe? We know SB can pull them out of nowhere, so who knows? For under £2m, sounds like it could be a good punt.
Indeed it was. According to the Allams both Elmohamady and McGregor are about sorted now. No Kasper thankfully it would appear now.? Now that would blow our socks off. With Elmo and McGregor sorted maybe one from Ross Turnbull and / or David Forde as the No.2 GK with Mark Oxley being loaned out for the season again. Curtis Davies and Luis McGugan in for £2m and a freebie and that leaves about £10m for 2 strikers. Job done apart from say 2/3 season loans at the end of august maybe ?
Three points... 1. "thankfully" no to Kasper? What do you mean by that? He's a terrific keeper. 2. Curtis Davies in for £2m... did you half what he'll actually come for?
Not Clint Marcelle?! Bloody hell Seriously though, I fully agree with this. What a terrific player he was.
