What a lot of people don't realise, is that there is NO LIMIT to the ammount of tobbaco you can bring back from abroad for your personal use, and BY LAW, customs officers are not allowed to pull you out for questioning UNLESS they have reason to believe that you are carrying excise goods for a commercial purpose. Unless you have previous history for smuggling, or customs officers have had a tip off, BY LAW they cannot stop you just because you are carrying more than their official guideline ammount, or you look dodgy or whatever. The UK Border Agency officers are worse than the gestapo!
Would you like to get in a queue stuck behind him? It was a set up, he knew what he was doing and what ever he was doing was enough to get noticed by customs - he got exactly the reaction he was after, hence he was wired for sound. Whilst the customs and excise attention was diverted on to this publicity seeker I wonder how many terrorists could have been smuggling in god knows what. Two wrongs have never made a right in my book.
i thaught the limit was 16 sleeves of ***s, not sure about the backy like maybe 60 packets, funny video though thanks for sharing that with us davros
The 16 sleeves and 3kg of baccy is a guideline (which is being cut in the autumn to 4 sleeves and 1 kg )......but there is NO LIMIT to what you can bring back from the EU for your own personal use. If you ARE carrying more than the guideline, however, you are more than likely to be stopped and your goods (illegally) seized. http://nothing-2-declare.blogspot.com/2010/08/guide-to-buying-your-tobaccocigarettes.html
3200 ***s in the EU, 200 outside the EU. Living in Guernsey, which is outside the UK I fill a rucksack full of duty free every week. Never been caught yet
Publicity seeker?......He is a UK citizen who has done nothing illegal whatsoever. All he is trying to do is to prevent HIS goods being unlawfully taken from him. Anyone bringing back more than the "guideline limit" is advised to record the interrogation by UKBA gestapo, as it will be extremely helpful when trying to get your goods returned. http://nothing-2-declare.blogspot.com/p/stopped-by-ukba-customs.html
And yes they go after these petty hand baggage importers to prevent loss of duty on alcohol and tobacco while the Conservative party is in bed with some of the nation's biggest tax avoiders. I should know half of them live within a few miles of me.
HM Customs and Revenue website states the is no limit on alcohol or tobacco goods as long as they are for your own personal use and have the duty paid in the country where you bought them
you're exactly right!.....Trouble is, the custom officer drones presume everyone is a smuggler, and will do everything in their power to confiscate YOUR goods! It really is a disgrace how UK citizens are treated by these people. There are some really harrowing stories at http://nothing-2-declare.blogspot.com/2011/05/more-tales-of-woe-involving-ukbahmrc.html
That's a really useful link, Davros. Cheers We are both smokers and the UK prices are beginning to hurt these days.
The government are forcing people to get their tobacco products from abroad. Golden Virginia 50g, £4.50 in Belgium...... £14.50 in Morrisons! They try to encourage free trade with Europe......only for the UKBA to steal YOUR goods when coming back through customs! I'm really thinking about a trip to Belgium for a years (perfectly legal) supply of baccy.....which will see me save over £1500, but am worried that the gestapo will nick the lot!
I honestly believe that other countries should follow Britains lead in taxing cigarettes etc to the hilt to try to cut down on their use. It's just been revealed that one in four women in Sunderland last year smoked through their pregnancies: I find that sad and shocking and drastic action needs to be taken.
yeah......and we might as well charge £10 a pint while we're at it. I'm sure all the weekend staff at A&E would be over the moon.
