He really wants to go back oop north this summer and we are after a PX for Marvin Sordell plus cash but Burnley have offered Dean Marney plus cash. Dean Marney - Defensive midfield Marvin Sordell - England U21 attacker If it were Sordell then who would be the front two? Kermit/Sordell Kermit/Obika Obika/Sordell So what is the better option for disposing of Stephens ? AllHell
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22366489 Marney has only just signed a two-year contract at Burnley, so they have not offered him to us, nor will they offer him to us in the near future (unless something very strange is going on).
Agreed Kish. I wouldn't touch Sordell with a ten-foot pole and I can't see the point in signing another defensive midfielder now Hughes and Gower are both available. If he's determined to go Northwards, let's properly put him up for transfer and see who bites. I tick the box for 'neither of the above'.
There isn't a box for neither of the above it's an either/or question I am not sure why people are so set for him to stay..... there were some games last season when he was truely shocking with his performances and can we afford to wait for the 1 in 10 games when he plays well?
I'm not set for him to stay but neither Marney or Sordell feel me with much excitement. Can't we just get more money for him then Chrissy Powell can go after somebody he wants
I have only seen Sordell in a few games on TV. He looked totally clueless in all of them, but someone at the FA must like him as he gets picked for England and GB. I have never been impressed by Stephens as a Charlton player and when we signed a rash of players two years ago I forecast he would be the first to leave (although Taylor has beaten him to it, as may Green and Wright-Phillips). I actually think BWP is a better player than Sordell right now. And if we are looking to the future then we have Pigott and Azeez to come through, with Sho-Silva a further year away. Hopefully one of that three will make the grade. I do think Stephens could do well at the right club, though, and we should hold out for half million, otherwise keep him and encourage him to restore his value by playing well until Christmas to secure an advantageous move in January. Unlike Tewks, I do feel we could use another defensive CM. We cannot rely on Hughes' or Jackson's fitness, and maybe not on Gower's either. And it is hard to take Gower seriously as a defensive midfielder as his has spent most of his career as a skilful but lightweight winger. It makes sense to sign someone cheap (because in the latter stages of their career) as we have Cousins and Poyet (and maybe Jordan?) coming through the season after next. So Marney ticks that box, but has he got the right attitude (the Jackson and Hughes attitude)?
The problem with selling him is that Bury have a sell on fee percentage, so maybe we're trying to swap him to get best value for money
If thats the case then Chrissy Powell must know something we don't about Sordell as whenever I've seen him play he's been cack
Sordell looked good when he had a run of games towards the end if this season. Also was a solid championship performer before he joined Bolton. I'm not saying he excites me, but he would be a good buy.
AllHell - sorry, I should have made myself clear. My preferred option for Stephens was that we accepted the 1.6 million plus additions that Villa ended up offering us before Lambert called a halt. WTF we turned that offer down is anybody's guess. My second option is that we sell him to anyone for more than the 300k we paid for him, not much fussed if any other player is involved in the deal. Failing that, I'd like to see him back in the team, earning his money and playing to something like the potential we all know he has but which he failed to exhibit at any time during last season.
I have never rated Stephens, i am sorry to anyone who rates him but i genuinely cannot fathom how anyone in the stands would think he is anthing other than awful. He cant pass a ball, gives it away at every given opputunity, has no idea how to tackle and his positioning is abysmal. The only thing he can do is hit a decent shot but he never gets himself in the positions to do that anyway. I would have bitten villas hand, arm, leg and head off for the money they offered, why they even wanted him is a mystery :s
Think he's our most talented after. Also feel he's our most frustrating. He had a very cultured style, and don't think we ever found the right partner for him. At the start of his first season when Hollands was holding and Stephens pushed up- he looked awesome. Since then CP seemed to ask him to sit, which IMO is something he's got horribly wrong.
