With Norman I think part of it was the forwards in those days were not adverse to dishing out a bit of stick themselves in fact it might be the ole rose tinted glasses but the only player I can remember 'diving' on a fairly regular basis was Frannie Lee who developed the 'tripping himself trick' to a high degree something he used to come out with when ever Man City were losing 1-0 or drawing 0-0 with less than 10 mins to go or were facing whichever team were top of the league early doors in the game, but I have to say it fooled everyone until people saw it on TV.
Turner for City, didn't see many get the better of him, plus Gow. Terry Hurlick and was it Mark Wright the other nutcase around at that time.
I saw Graham Roberts score a wonder goal for Dorchester at Andover - ran the length of the pitch and buried it. I was a youngish lad, and as my Dad could not go to the game, the Dorchester manager at the time (David Best - ex Ipswich and Bournemouth keeper) looked after me that night, so I was in the dressing room with the team and I sat on the bench. The substitute I sat next to that night - Harry Redknapp (he had just come back from playing in the states - Seattle??). Roberts went on to Weymouth (briefly) then Spurs, Rangers etc
That's something to remember I hadn't realized Harry Rednapp had played for Dorchester I think he was a player coach in the USA for Seattle until about 79/80 I had wondered what he did between that time and going to Bournemouth in about 1982.
Bobby Kellard for City. I think I remember that Gerry Gow and Sammy McIlroy both got sent off at the Gate when neither would give an inch! Argentian Rattin - really dirty ****er!!
You sure you're not referring to when McIlroy got sent off for a bust up with one of City's all time great hard men, Kevin Mabbutt?
Could be used as a good tactic years ago- i remember a tricky winger in the 70's called Peter Barnes who could be magical on his day- Defenders soon got to learn that if you chopped him down 2 or 3 times, he wouldnt want to know the rest of the game, and you might has well have taken him off-
