So, L'Equipe are reporting he has passed a medical at Monaco ahead of a €28m move. Thoughts please.

If Cabaye goes and we don't manage to hang onto Colo I seriously worry for next season

That's about £24m? Great business, though only on the condition that it is re-invested of course.

He can **** off for 24m for all I care. We should get someone more consistent in.

An offer you couldn't refuse if true. Certainly replaceable and a lot easier to replace than Colo, but I'd prefer to keep. He is a bit fairweather, lacks leadership and won't grab a game by the scruff of the neck for you when the chips are down. Clearly a talented ball player though who if you can get others doing his graft, can be effective. 28m though is way way above his market value.

    This was reported yesterday.

French media outlet L’Equipe is reporting on their TV station that Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye is in Monaco for a medical, and has apparently passed the exam.

Goal.com’s French writer Robin Bairner passed on the news via Twitter, and said the news came from a “sure source” from within Monaco’s medical department.

This is interesting news considering no reports have been made in the last few days of a fee being agreed for, although obviously not everything is made public.

Two days ago, Monaco sporting director Vadim Vasilyev was quoted as saying, “Cabaye? He is a very interesting player.”

Monaco, funded by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, have already bought up a pair from FC Porto plus highly coveted striker Radamel Falcao.

According to soccer database transfermarkt.com, Cabaye would be worth in the €16.5 million ($22 million) range.

The 27-year-old French midfielder is one of Newcastle’s core players, having made 42 appearances in all competitions last season for the Toon.

Playing for Monaco would mark a return to the French Ligue 1 for Cabaye. He was purchased by Newcastle in January of 2011 from Lille.

Oddly, the report has not appeared on the website for L’Equipe as of this writing.

You say this but who do we have in our squad that is currently as effective as Cabaye in that role?
Fair enough he may be going for a good price but after last season who, of a similar quality, will realistically come to us?

£20+ million is a good deal for us and as long as it is reinvested properly THIS summer it is good business. 2 years of good service, all be it a little inconsistent, and the fact he would have been a big reason we signed the lads in January ain't bad for a near £20m profit.

As I say I'd rather keep him. However if you put that money on the table and strengthen the way we did after Carroll, its a no brainer. He'd have to be replaced of course but he was very very poor last season bar a short spell in Jan/Feb. We have strength in the midfield area and as long as we add another we'd be fine. I think Cabaye is quality but if he is not going to show it because he doesn't like the physicality, you might as well bite the bullet. I'm sure we'd have plenty of options lined up. For instance if you told me we'd get James McCarthy and invest the rest in a striker, then based on last seasons performances I'd be quite happy. Not that it has to be McCarthy, its just we are not losing much in the Cabaye of last season when you are talking about those silly fees. I have a lot of faith in Anita to progress massively this season too. Foreign players normally improve with time as they get the pace of the league.

    It's good money if confirmed.

My worry is that we will not get a suitable replacement - for years I consider that the problem for Newcastle United is a distinct lack of creativity from the midfield area - with the sale of Cabaye and possibly Ben Arfa as well, we will need to un-earth some real gems.

I think Hull City & Crystal Palace will really struggle next season, it's looking likely that we won't be far ahead of them... if at all.

£12 mill for a striker, £12 mill for a replacement, all of our transfer budget still available for a CB and a handful of propsects for the future.

A good player on his day. would be happy to keep him but won't be devestated to see him go

If we got 25m for Cabaye we'd be laughing. Very good player on his day but at times last season it looked like he didn't want to be here.

His true market value is probably around 10m-15m so to get anything over 20m would be great business as long as we get a proven replacement (although we do already have good depth inCM) and MA, DL & AP would have no excuses for not getting two strikers in with the extra cash.

If there is truth in this and the fee is £25m then there may be truth in the Siem de Jong rumours doing the rounds today. Would be a great replacement and still leave enough from the Cabaye transfer to lodge a serious bid for Aubameyang. If only we could be sure that moneys received from sales would be reinvested directly in playing staff.

Do you think they feel they need excuses for what they do with the cash?

One for you Del, one for you AP and two for me, and so on and so forth.

Colo is staying it appears, Cabaye is a class act. BUT... i think we could find someone else to compliment Tiote and Sissoko.

Would be sad to see him go but having Cabaye and HBA in the team means there's too much inconsistency.

    Don't sell Cabaye
    Yohan Cabaye
    I just don't think you'll understand
That if monaco bid that high,
    For Yohan Cabaye,
    We'd bite off Monaco's haaaands

A worry for me is the message it sends. Players like Ben Arfa, Sissoko etc. may a start looking for the exits. We need to show our intentions quickly with some proper signings I feel in order to settle any doubts they may be having

The Independent are saying that NUFC have denied the Cabaye to Monaco story, but only quote 'club insiders'.

If Cabaye goes, we can give the free role in front of Sissoko and Tiote to Ben Arfa. Sign a decent winger and striker and we would be laughing in my opinion.
