Former Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle will be appointed as Wigan's new boss on a 12-month rolling contract.
The 46-year-old Scot will succeed Roberto Martinez at the DW Stadium, after the Spaniard joined Everton.
Coyle managed Bolton between 2010 and 2012, before being sacked five months after being relegated from the Premier League.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, 76, has confirmed to BBC sport a deal in principle has been agreed.
Wigan were relegated into the Championship last season but May's FA Cup win sees them in the Europa League.

"I have agreed a deal in principle with Owen and his agent is now with our chief executive to finalise the deal," Whelan told BBC Sport . "But as far as I'm concerned, we have sorted it and I hope the rest will be sorted in the next hour.
"I've told him returning to the Premier League is the total and utter priority. It's fantastic that we are in Europe but that comes second and he knows that the Premier League is where we have to be.
"It's been no easy task but Owen has shown enthusiasm and passion from the moment I met him. He's been there and done it with Burnley.
"He wasn't so successful at Bolton but he had a lot of injuries and bad luck. People forget that. You need luck on times but he's certainly got the passion, energy and enthusiasm I was looking for."
Whelan also confirmed Coyle would be appointed on the basis of a 12-month rolling contract.
"When you're in a situation like we are at Wigan and have just been relegated from the Premier League, the amount of money we receive is going to go down," he said.
"So I can't commit to telling a manager I'm going to pay him a certain amount for so many years as we have to be careful. Wigan is a special club and we are run a certain way and I will take no risks."
Coyle took over at Bolton in January 2010, six months after guiding Burnley to promotion to the Premier League and subsequently signing a contract extension at Turf Moor.
The Trotters went on to survive a relegation battle while Burnley went down.
In 2010-11 Bolton reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and finished 14th after spending much of the season in the top half of the table, but in 2012 they were relegated, ending an 11-year spell in the top flight.
Coyle, who has also managed St Johnstone and Falkirk, was sacked in October 2012 with Bolton 18th in the Championship after winning only three of their first 10 matches.
Wigan midfielder James Mcarthur tweeted: "Happy with the new appointment in Owen Coyle, another Scot. Hopefully everyone can get behind him and the team for new season."

Former England manager Steve McClaren had been heavily linked with the vacancy at the DW Stadium but Coyle was chosen by chairman Dave Whelan.
The former Bolton striker made one appearance for the Republic of Ireland and played for a host of teams in Scotland.
Martinez, 39, was given permission to leave Wigan in late May after leading the Latics to a historic FA Cup triumph, although he could not prevent their relegation from the Premier League.
He was then named as David Moyes' successor at Everton on 5 June, with Moyes taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United after 11 years at Goodison Park.
Under his reign, Wigan finished 16th twice and 15th, before slipping to 18th this season.

I honestly think that Coyle is a good manager, he had a miserable time at Bolton which i'm sure the Burnley fans will truly appreciate, but they also remember him getting Burnley promoted to the Premier League.

He's no slouch, but with Europa League fixtures and of course the extra eight league fixtures on top of domestic cups, he's gonna have to juggle as well as Chris Hughton did at Birmingham City. <ok>

A 12-month rolling contract doesn't exactly scream 'confidence' from the board now does it?

Coyle looked good at Burnley. Had an awful time at Bolton but any manager can have a bad period. Be interesting to see how he gets on, certainly likes football played the correct way so should fit in well there. He is taking on a tough task though and one Martinez was wise to run from. Juggling the Europa with Championship is just about as incompatible as it gets!!

Throw the release clauses, players wanting to leave and mass turnover of squad he will face, then he is going to be really up against it.

Not really. This thread was reflecting on a crap MANAGER being appointed at a club I hate. If he get's them promoted please feel free to bump this thread as I will then have egg on my face.

if you are referring to Kinnear though...he is a buffoon and you will find more Toon fans laughing at his appointment on the other thread.... Along with my comments.
