GASTON WATCH. He started the game against Venezuela today. Generally he was involved in all the best movements and won the ball which led to the goal. One moment where he beat 3 players in a 30yard run but never had the pace to get away from them so set up Forlan who blazed over. The commentators were very impressed with him and mentioned that he plays for us several times.10 minutes into the second half he got carried off' he came back on but got carried off 2 minutes later after running for the ball. To me it looked like cramp so not concerned yet

Echo linking us to Creswell. Seen a fair bit of him - very consistent but also very average and really no better than Harding. Better than fox though! Shaw and targett probably mean we don't need him? !

Depends whether Targett will be ready or not. Can't see him being ready for PL football yet, and can only see a LB coming in if Fox has had enough of being a bench warmer at best.

Not realistically going to get a LB in who will dislodge Shaw and be happy to sit on the bench.

How can he be better than Fox, but no better than Harding? Last time I checked, Harding was cover at Forest in the championship and Fox was backup at a Premier League club?...

More and more I think Fox will stay. The only way we could realistically get anyone better as back up would be if we signed someone 32 or older who was happy to play fewer games because of their age.

Provided shaw is staying I think we have more important areas to strengthen. It would be nice to have 2 great players competing for each position but not realistic at this stage.

Reality is that if we are serious about competing at the top of the PL then we need great players competing in every position.

I am fine with having shaw, fox, targett and clyne as possibale left backs, we need backup on the right if chambers isn't looking likely. I would be very happy to see gamez come in as that would give us serious competition for both left and right back all in the one signing.

I hope targett gets a fair run during the friendlies. people who have seen him rate him very highly.

Fox isn't leaving, I've heard that MP thinks he'll be useful in someway. Don't ask how!
At least Fox can cross the ball!

I think I'm probably alone in feeling that we need to sign a left back to compete with Luke and possibly even as a first choice, preferably one at the later stages of their career. I do completely apppreciate Luke's potential and he is already a formidable player. But he only broke into the side last year as a result of desparation, we should never have been playing him that much at this stage in his career, and the constant niggles he picked indicate that the games were sriously taking their toll. If we aren't careful, we could ruin his potential.

I would still expect Luke to get plenty of game time but I think we definetely need another quality option in that position.

I absolutely agree with you AT. I said on another thread that Luke deserves not to be first choice, by which I mean he should be being nurtured the way JWP is. You're right, he had too much game time last season, and the consequences could have been serious.

I wonder if loaning Buttner could be an option. If we were in for him last year, then someone amongst the recruitment team presumably rates him.

There's no guarantee that Moyes will take to him, so could be open to loaning him out. They've also got Fabio back from QPR, thus increasing competition to be Utd's no.2 LB.

And if they sign Baines, that no.2 (and no.3) LB may get less game this coming season than they would if, the older, Evra remains Utd's no.1 and Baines does not sign.

Yes Buttner wouldn't play every week or us, but he'd get more PL exposure that he did last season. Certainly based on how much football Fox played for us - even Post Shaw's debut - last year. As has been mentioned above, Shaw not playing every week right now could ultimately benefit him in later years.

The quote from Ferguson is interesting. I remember he was incredibly careful with the young Ryan Giggs, using him very sparingly, and maybe Giggs is getting the benefits of that now.
