at least in the UK you get a vote to decide who the PM should be, sadly the Brits decided against introducing "Democracy" (i use the term lightly) here in HK and it would seem that we're as far away as ever from getting to choose our leader. tho the Honky family will continue, along with thousands of others to demand that right on the annual democracy protest march coming up on July 1st. btw last time i voted in the UK would have been for Kinnock in 92. was also quite friendly with ian bone of class war fame during his punk days in swansea in the early 80's, wish he'd pop over for a bit of agitating in HK...........

Swans dragged through wringer by gutter press journos. The Malaysian experiment, recently promoted, blissful silence, peace and quiet. Absolutely no media pressure; Politics.

I'll be voting for the first time at the next general election, and at the moment I'll probably be voting Labour. I'm left wing (and Labour are not left enough) and I know they're largely ******s, but they will always be better than the Tories. The Lib Dems can jog on after giving me a ton of debt for trying to further my education :steam:

As for monarchy, I'm fairly indifferent - leaning towards pro-monarchy. I'd rather we were a Scandanavian social democracy or whatever rather than a republic if we did have to get rid of the monarchy, a little bit because I despise the idea of having a big charade over a Presidency far more than the idea of constitutional monarchy.

It would be nice if Scotland didn't leave the union, and it doesn't look very likely that they will, but if they do fall for Salmond's bull****ting then that'll be a shame...mainly because they'll go far further down the economic ****ter than we are and much more quickly!

On the topic of me voting for the first time as I mentioned earlier, I'm unfortunate enough to live in a Dorset constituency which is a Tory safe seat  And my university accommodation is in the longest lasting Tory hold in the whole country! SAVE ME (Oh and the Dorset MP is an utter tool)

interesting comments Cherry. I did an assignment at Uni (when I was an old bloke) on a Social Democratic form of govt and was surprised at how effective it seemed to be. I think I used Sweden as my prime example. How much oil money can Scotland still generate? big Question if they leave the Union, how much money would the other 3 lose?
Our govt is going to be decimated at our next election on Sep 14 and the absolute dickwad who will be PM makes me shudder at the thought. (not that I vote for the current mob of fools but would prefer Labor to the Libs.

utter tool you mentioned - arnt they all?

Cherry the problem with labour is that it is much to right of centre for my liking, if you put a blind fold on you would have a problem telling who is labour/tory or even lib dem in this current political climate,as a country we need to start getting behind the welsh assembly and for our own political future. in 20/30 years we will be 4 independant countries on these islands not necessarily because Wales,Scotland or N ireland wished for it but because the English will have forced it. Don't worry about Scotland going it alone, the biggest threat to the union are the English and a like minded government, personally i would welcome it very much, but in Wales there is currently no appetite for it.

she does Mabon, I think though as a youngster she came here. Your comment to Cherry, I agree with the politics here, there really is bugger all difference between lab and lib, they may fight over a few issues but they are all morons. 2 new political parties formed atm, be interesting how they poll this forthcoming election.

The problem is most of the politicians have never had a proper job to give them any credibility. Prime example, my cousins missus who was an AM. Her career progression was Politics degree-->Politicians Aide-->Politician. Where's the real job there? They should all have to work in the real world for at least 5 years before being able to be elected so we don't get these identikit politicians with no substance and all spin. The numbers in the commons should be slashed to save cash, they should have primary residences in their constituencies not in London, their expense limit should be dropped, when in London they should be living in serviced accommodation (like student digs) and they should bloody well practice what they preach and set an example. If I see Eric Pickles talking about how people should be healthier for example the next time I see him should be in a bloody gym. I want to see them in touch with their constituencies and not being the self-serving, bullshitting, spin merchants that they all seem to be nowadays. I know people hate Boris but he does say it as it is on a lot of occasions.

As for the Scots - well there's naff all oil left as we're importing most of it so they'll be skint and living off EU handouts just like Ireland.

Cherry, when I was your age I was against the monarchy but when you look at the amount of cash they generate through tourism, the cost to us (about 50p each I think) and the feel good factor generated through stuff like the Jubilee and weddings you can't help but love 'em. Well I think they're good and Kate is tip-top
