Yes and no. He's capable of being a very good striker but he was fairly inconsistent for us. There's a debate raging on at the moment about having a player who can hold up the ball over scoring goals. He holds the ball up well and he can finish given the opportunity, so you're getting a good player. If you're getting him on a free it's a great deal. He scored some great goals for us last season and the top end of the Championship is probably his level, hence his release. Oh and the fact that he managed something like 1 goal in 20 games.
hes an obviously london lad so comming back to the capital where his family is based could get the best out of him him and kermongst up front with our midfield could work wonders powell obviously trying get the best young free players around hopefully do a better job than fuller he was the most laziest player ive ever seen put on a charlton top!he only started playing when his contract was up good luck hull in the prem
Simpson is a great larker. His work ethic is brilliant and his hold up play is exemplary. However, he is a striker and doesn't seem to be able to finish. He made a great start alongside Sone Aluko, bagging 6 goals at the beginning of the Season but then once Aluko sustained an injury, Simpson finished with 1 goal in 31 games. If he has a partner that works on the same wave length, he will be a cracking signing.
decent hold up play but not a lot else , personally think he could do to drop to league one to try discover his goal scoring touch .
Personally a little disappointed that we let him go - has excellent hold up play and can finish but overall his scoring record was the reason we released him on our promotion to the PL. Also,if I'm not mistaken I believe only Chester played more games last season than he did. Am sure he'll get a Club at NPC level.
This is pretty much spot on. There is a school of thought that he can't finish, but his lack of goals is really down to playing entire games with his back to goal.
Yeah, but that doesn't defend the way that whenever he had chance after chance in a game and blazed them over/wide every time. He missed many sitters and was frustrating at times the way he'd bang them into Row ZZ of either the South or North Stand.
So you weren't watching Hull City last Season then? Because I can remember (and many who sit around me will remember) how mad everyone would get when he took 15 chances per game on average to score, and usually only had 13 chances resulting in no goals.
He was guilty of some shocking misses, he probably missed more from a yard out than any other play in the Championship. Which was even more annoying considering some of the goals we've seen him score (the one at Wolves springs to mind; it was right in front of me too, a great finish).
Exactly. PLT seems to be the only guy who missed every one his howlers in front of goal. The Wolves goal was brilliant, the Peterborough 'turn and finish' was nice too.
The goal he scored against Liverpool was probably my favourite one he scored. He showed such great composure to slot it home. In fact, all the goals in that game were amazing.
They were. RoKo's one-two with McLean was International quality. Brady's quick dig and Simpson's composure topped off a great performance.
I think he will do well for you, good signing on a free. Good hold up player and picked up 8 assists for us but 6 goals in 43 league games is the reason he hasn't been offered a new deal.
Bloody good player at championship level, I can see him bagging 20 odd sometime soon in his career and being sold for a lot of money. Needs a good partner for him to shine, but he's a stand out individual in the championship, great control and strength, he can pick the ball up and hold on to it all game, good vision and passing, just lacks the positional play to get into goal scoring positions, but as others have said he was our target man last season so didn't get much opportunity to fox the box. With that big French **** taking the holding up responsibilities I think Simpson could be a great acquisition for you, disappointed he's left as there's definitely a very good player in there but it would do neither party any favours for him to stay, we'd be paying him wage to not do much and he wouldn't be playing.
Nice lad, works hard, touch of a rapist and can't finish. Stick a decent finisher alongside him and he'll probably be a handy player.
This - Simmo has a great work ethic and his size makes his hold up play almost unexpected!! Seems very difficult to knock off the ball. Some of his goals are extraordinary - you just ask the question, how did he do that? One the season just gone v Wolves at home he scored from the touch line - beating the keeper. I personally would have kept him, but London will suit him. Best of luck to Simmo and Charlton.
It shows in this video, directly involved in half of our nominations for goal of the season. Assisted goals B, G and H and scored goal C. Gives you an idea of what he can do.
