I think it was a joking response to who should ManU sign...then after his second neuron connected, he realised it could start a media furore, promptly followed by a visit to the bench outside Nicola's office. A friend's prank is also likely.

Not sure if this has been discussed on the bolton sponsorship thread but Pappis Cisse is refusing to wear a shirt with wonga on it. Good on him i say- not afraid to stand up for his Islamic beliefs.

If he is to be sold should we go in for him?

Why would he be sold? Freddie Kanoute done the same thing when Sevilla were sponsored by 888.com, but he just wore the shirt without a sponsor on it.

It was suggested that he might be. Sounds extreme but why should one player be allowed to wear a sponsor free shirt? Other players could turn around and refuse.

So in the unlikely event that happens, would you want him?

Lawrie McMenemy had one and Dennis Wise spent most of his time sat on it when he was an apprentice at the Dell.

    Papid Cisse = non story.

There is precedent with players just not playing with a sponsor. From the sponsor's point of view (and from a Newcastle point of view) it only draws more attention to the sponsor's name and what they do so isn't a bad thing. How many of us could say 100% who Newcastle's sponsor was before this.

    He will stay.

How can he not be happy with Wonga, yet quite content with Virgin Money?? They're both corporate financial institutions, so if we're going to talk about ethics and principles, there's no difference between the two is there?

But the story hasn't been that he thinks Wonga are screwing the poor, it's that money lending for profit is against his beliefs as a Muslim. The only difference between Wonga and Virgin is the interest rates they charge and I highly doubt the Koran specifies what interest rate is permitted and what is not.

Maybe its the behaviour of the saucy old biddies on the advert. Or he quite likes the idea of virgins?

I'm lucky enough to have studied Islamic Business Principles. Any type of unequal financial transfer (interest) is forbidden by Shariah Law. However, all major banks now have Shariah Permissible arms to access the huge and increasing Islamic market. So Virgin will, most likely, have a Shariah permissible branch set up somewhere like Bahrain whereas I'm fairly sure Wonga do not!
