1053: FOOTBALL GOSSIP Jermaine Pennant New Stoke manager Mark Hughes releases seven players including Jermaine Pennant and Dean Whitehead. Long serving duo Rory Delap and Mamady Sidibe former England defender Matthew Upson, plus keeper Carlo Nash and midfielder Matthew Lund have also not been offered new contracts. BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/22793685 Any of interest on a FAT?
Rory Delap, long throws aside, is a ****ing awful footballer. Shotton (and Dudgeon I believe) can throw them further anyway. Sidibe is ****, Nash was never going to be PL standard and I've never heard of Lund. The only player I'd really take there is Dean Whitehead, but only as cover. I think Pennant will go back to Birmingham as relief for the inevitable departure of Redmond.
Every little helps. We shouldn't turn our noses up at scoring goals. None of them out of that list entice me tbh. Did Bruce have Whitehead at Sunderland? If he did he might get him back.
Upson's career has gone downhill- from World Cup centre half, to fighting back to back relegations, to being without a club in 3 years.
Am I right in saying that Delap couldn't even get in Barnsley's team when on loan last season? 6 appearances for them after joining on loan in January
Hull City have Joe Dudgeon for the long throws. Hartlepool look to be getting Rory Delap if the rumour mill is correct. Upson could well stay with Brighton and the rest are not good enough for the PL. Maybe TWS will be interested as they shop in the FAT market now.
In answer to the OP - of course we want to score from long throws. Every team in the world wants to score from whatever means possible. In answer to the subtext, we dont want to sign Rory Delap.
Can someone please recap the throw in rules.I haven't seen a foul throw given since Adam was a lad.ActuallyI think there was a comedy one at the KC a couple of seasons ago.May have been Cam Stewart. The reason I ask is I think a lot of these long throws from Delap etc seem to have a foot in the field of play on delivery. Its never been said but the throw in against Cardiff immediately prior to their penalty looked to be foul throw to me. I've said before we need a throw in coach as most of ours go backwards. In answer to the query any goal will do next year.Dudgeon does have a decent throw but will he be a starter?
Id rather they throw it in and then cross it into the box. I have a hard time remembering to many goals going in off long throws.
We tend to be crap from throw in's full stop. Out of the list only Whitehead is anywhere near PL standard. But If I were Brucie i'd stay clear of the lot.
As long as the foot is touching part of the line it is not a foul throw, e.g. the player can have the edge of his heel on the edge of the line and it is fine
