Ay, you wouldn't be besmirching Djimi if you had seen him playing for Seattle this season in the MLS, as a CB no less!! Solid as a rock he is!!

I imagine this has been brought up in this thread, probably by a Swansea fan or a Bitter, but Martinez did not "knock back" Liverpool. He wasn't ever formally offered the job. These days Managers are never actually formally 'offered the job' until they have held talks with the Clubs management and basically got the job in the bag. Then they are formally offered it when everyone is happy with the appointment.

However, this isn't because LFC are too good, or any other face-saving attempt, or that there's something not good enough or wrong with Martinez, there isn't he's a great Coach, it was simply a matter of the LFC Board having a slightly different opinion on how the club should operate in order to progress as compared to Roberto when they had discussions on the future of LFC.

We wanted our Committee-led, more Continental approach to running the club, whereas Roberto wanted the same setup he had at Wigan, full control. He felt that without this he wouldn't be able to give of his best, and do as good a job as he felt he could do. It was obvious after initial talks this was a sticking point and both Martinez and the club both decided this wasn't the right appointment for either. basically a mutual understanding.

I respect Martinez for not compromising his beliefs and just going along with it to get the job. which could of then jeopardised LFC's performance on and off the field further down the line leading to the appointment ending in disaster. I appreciate him being open and honest with us as many others in that situation wouldn't of just to further themselves.

I like Martinez and think he's a top Manager and he'll take time, but ultimately I feel he will be a good appointment for Everton.

For a manager to be held in as high regard as RM is, I would expect them to improve a club they have been in control of for 4 years. At Wigan he never got to grips with their biggest weakness, the defence. He had a win percentage of 26.8%. League finishes under him were 16-16-15-18, points totals 36 -42-43-36. Under Bruce win percentage was 34%, prem league finishes 17-14-11.

    He took them backwards IMO.

Everton have got a splendid manager in Roberto Martínez. He shows a strong determination to succeed. If you had to complain about Moyes he did seem to lack ambition during the last season(s) of his Everton tenure.

His last project was to beat Liverpool at Anfield. Martinez did it as Wigan manager.<ok>

Perhaps he didn't take them forward, but he had no money to work with - Everyone lionises Moyes for keeping Everton competitive on a shoestring, but Martinez kept Wigan afloat in the PL for three seasons while generating a profit in the transfer market, finally getting a pot, but going down in the process. Not a recompence admittedly, but an achievement - it wasn't the Carling Cup, but the FA Cup.

If Moyes kept Everton competitive on an average of £1.75mil per season over the last 10 years, what will Martinez achieve?

Wigan are a small-town club with limited resources. Even staying in the PL for a few years was a pretty good achievement imo. I think Martinez and the club deserve some credit for that.
DW is still a prick though.

Martinez - Everton's first ever foreign manager [if you don't count Scots, Irish and Welsh]

Good luck to him. I think he will do a good job.

He seems a nice lad so I do wish him good luck - and I think he will do better than Moyes.

Moyes had a job for life there, and same goes for RM. The way Everton's set up, the manager leaves when *he* wants to so I think his length of stay will depend on how much ambition he has.

On the other hand, I reckon Moyes will get at least 2 years then it's either the boot or a knighthood!

Good move for our neighbours, will be interested to see how he sets his defense out, because lets face it, he's sh*t at it. But now he's got some decent options, though if Baines does one I think Figuaroa will be snapped up, all in all, Everton will now pass the ball about nicely, getting the best out of Osman and Pienaar, though I think the transition will hinder them at first, but they'll get used to it, should be another good battle with em!

Roberto Martinez has been given the go ahead to sell Marouane Fellaini if someone comes for him. Arsenal already made a £M22 bid: the release clause is not met which is £M24.
Martinez is going to have 100 percent of the proceeds to spend on new players. If they sell him, who says Everton is not a selling club.<ok>
