No need or reason to apologise - you are merely drawing a comparison with another illness that most of us can relate to.
I thought the thread was about S Fry my mistake, stop with the name calling if you dont mind,or take your abuse elsewhere.
Yes the thread is about Stephen Fry but you agreed with comments made about mental illness in general. This was what I was objecting to. Fair enough about the name calling though, I apologise.
Wow what a ****ing peach of a human you are! It's not about manning up, it's a physical problem. It's like saying pull yourself together, you can't there's a chemical problem in your brain. It's insensitive twats like u that **** it up for ppl Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I think what we have confirmed here is that some people are ill-educated, bitter, nasty, vindictive imbeciles with no compassion whatever and an IQ to match, whereas thankfully the majority of us are not.
That was my aim but can still see how others may not have seen it that way. Put it this way I cud have put it better
Ah yes i see what your saying, well my comment was directed at S Fry not people who suffer mental illness in general.Sorry for the confusion but the guy was or still is a coke head so to cry about mental health problems dont wash with me im afraid.
OK. I know I shouldn't bite, but posts like this make me wonder why I bother coming here. Let's hope there's some football news soon. I find it strange that this supposed 'Good Lord' left you severely lacking in the 'good will to all men' department.
Not understanding the level of crippling disability that a genuine mental illness can visit on an otherwise healthy individual, or not feeling compassion for somebody suffering in this way is simply down to ignorance of the subject. At least this subject is talked about nowadays. Hopefully fuller understanding from a wider range of people will follow on in time.
Is it me, or are geniues more prone to mental illness - Kurt Cobain being a prime example that springs to mind?
You may have a point there, not everyone's cup of tea, but my comedic hero is Spike Milligan and by God did he ever have mental health issues!
Yes there seems to be a correlation between high intelligence and mental illness. On the point about drugs I think that it is far more likely that they have the illness and therefore take drugs rather that the other way round.I suppose that on a football forum you have to expect a few who have the "man up" attitude.I think that if you don't have these problems it's difficult to understand those who do.Luckily most of us are just not wired that way.
Normally it is a pleasure to contribute to threads on this board - I am afraid this has become a rabble and I cannot believe that fellow fans are reducing this topic to the level they are , please everyone take a breath and revisit again with constructive comments.
But a certain amount of his problems were attributed to the horrors he experienced in WW2 Dave, especially when he was at Monte Casino
Manning up to Mental Illness is something that I had to do - my ex-fiance suffered from bi-polarism and tried to take her own life. The problem for me was that I didn't recognise the fact that she was so very ill, as I saw her wildly fluctuating moods as part of her personality. I was perhaps blinded by how wonderful she was when she was at her best. When she tried to take her own life, it blew me out of the water. I was confronted by truths that I had dared not look at, because I suppose I was "manning up" to them and not intelligently trying to see what was wrong with her. I have since seen that mental illnesses are perhaps the most misunderstood of all illnesses and we need to recognise them as damaging to the individual and the people around them as any other debilitating illness. Educating ourselves and not just labeling people with what are essentially prejudiced markers is the way forward. I feel sorry for SF, he must be in tumultuous pain at times and sees death as the only answer. I know through experience that with the right people around them and with the correct support that life can be as best it can be (under the circumstances). Happily, my ex is better now, and as far as i know leads a successful life. Some of the posters on here need to look beyond their own definitions of mental illness, as it is indiscriminate. Imagine a family member under the same circumstances and consider the feelings you might have before posting such medieval comments please
Stephen has just tweeted! Stephen Fry ‏@stephenfry 13h Thank you all for your concern. As Pres of @mindcharity I could only tell truth if asked directly. Now fine. On good meds. Love to you all x
Well said CC. Although mental illness is not always easy to relate to for many, I think certain people should at least try to employ a little bit more empathy.
