With Roberto De Fanti soon to be confirmed as Sunderland's Director of Football, it appears the next Italian to arrive will be Inter Milan's Chief Scout, Valentino Angeloni. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, who is a journalist and commentator for Sky Sport in Italy, Sunderland want to poach Angeloni for the position as Technical Director and have made Inter Milan an official offer.

Angeloni is a former footballer with over 350 senior appearances to his name. He started his career with Sampdoria before moving to Lazio and it was at Lazio that a serious injury forced his retirement. Angeloni had a spell in management with Italian minnows Solbiatese but it was as a scout that he really made his name. Working with Cremona before becoming Head of Scouting Operations at Torino, it was then at Udinese that he really came to prominence.

For four years he was part of the Pozzi family's technical commission at Udinese and played a big role in the success of the 'Udinese Model'. The blueprint for which has been long admired throughout Europe for scouring smaller leagues around the world for young, talented players who can be bought cheaply but brought on and then sold for a profit.

A few notable examples of which are Alexis Sanchez, David Pizzaro, Vicenzo Iaquinta and former Sunderland pair Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan.

Using this model, Udinese were able to post a profit of €9,000,000 in the 2011/12 season, that's despite having approximately 100 players on their books (although most are loaned out to provide them with valuable playing time).

His success at Udinese led to Inter Milan snapping him up in March 2012 and is also likely to be the reason behind Sunderland's interest.

The position of Technical Director will be a new position at Sunderland but it's likely that Angeloni will be taking over the duties from Pop Robson, who was recently relieved of his role of Chief Scout. Although whether Ellis Short will provide him with a similar sized scouting budget that he received at Udinese, €13,000,000 per year, remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure, Sunderland are serious about overhauling the club from top to bottom and considering the money spent in the last few seasons, as well as the performances on the pitch, this overhaul is long overdue.

Wow! The club certainly mean business. Makes you think that prior to Ellis taking over as Chairman, the club was run by a bunch of amateurs who really didn't have a clue what they were doing.

We are certainly starting to look the professional outfit that we should be as a PL club.

Without denigrating Pop Robson in any way, this does seem like a major step up in our scouting system if true.

You have to say though that Udinese making a 9m euro profit from a bank of around 100 players would indicate that the vast majority must be utter rubbish with one or two gems making up for them. I wouldn't like to see us following that particular model but more the Inter model instead

Udinese qualify for Europa league without spending shed loads of cash, there has been some good financial management and player development taking place so this fellow has some worthy contacts.

My small worry is that we are beginning to be taken over by Italian football way of running things. We surely must have a UK scouting system.

Aye Dorset, this is exactly how I see it....If true, Ellis really does mean business.

And if this is true, it means he is backing this club with the same entrepreneurial know-how that he has employed to get where he is today in his business life.

Ellis is strong willed and shrewd customer who trusts his own judgement and boy, if I am thinking right about these reports, then we are in bloody good hands.

The bottom line is this; If Roberto De Fanti is to be confirmed as Sunderland's Director of Football, and Inter Milan's Chief Scout, Valentino Angeloni as Technical Director, then we will be allowed to be excited about our future.

Remember that Quinny quote ? ...." but Sunderland got under my skin... I love Sunderland."

Well maybe Ellis also loves this club now and he's proving it through showing this mind-set.

    KTF !!!

Yep, this bloke will hire and fire when he needs to.

Quinny sold him our club's history, hunger, passion, pride and massive community spirit, then he, ES, with his own nous and gut-feeling, has bought into something he really wants to get his teeth into.

....It just might be time to sit back and watch it all unfold for real this time !

Won't it be great to go through a season without having to swallow a daily dose of Valium to dull the pain?

Sunderland AFC News And Banter Page:

VALENTINO ANGELONI PACE FAREWELL: SUNDERLAND IN THE VIEWFINDER.

    Translated, it reads -

The reorganization of the Inter Corporate Environment, in all its parts, slowly takes shape.

After the change of technical guidance and the possible arrival of new leaders, here at home Inter prepares another farewell to Valentino Angeloni, head of the observers, who arrived at Inter Udinese just a year ago.

How clarifies Gianni Di Marzio on its website, behind the assumptions of withdrawal would offer an important part of a British company: "The Sunderland talk more and more Italian. In addition to the imminent arrival of De Fanti as chief executive, the English club also wants Valentino Angeloni, who arrived from Udinese last summer at Inter. A talent scout of great reliability and experience, which at Sunderland would have the role of technical director: an important position for Angeloni, currently chief observers at Inter, then likely it will accept seen the step forward that derives from the new role. Inter then eventually decide calmly with those who replace him, the process of scouting for this market has already been completed. "

over the last year or two the club have really moved forward off the field in terms of shirt suppliers, sponsorship deals and linking up with clubs around the world to help take the club forward on the business front.

now it seems as though we are really moving forward in terms of off field football related positions with Roberto Di Fanti pretty much our director of football even though it might not be officially yet and the move for this bloke from Inter.

Ellis really does want the club running efficiently and you can see that from what has happened and what is happening. I really do think after this transfer window I really do think we can trust our head coach, director of football and chief scout to get us some good quality players from around the world to Sunderland for a very good price. We do need Ellis to get out his cheque book for this summer as the squad is that short on numbers and lacking so much quality.
