Mick McManus, the famous wrestler who was a fixture on British TV in the 60s and 70s has died aged 93.

Who can forget (indeed some of us are so old we can't remember) those fierce battles with Jackie "Mr TV" Pallo, wonderful. Of course, it was all bollux, but nevertheless that's another piece of my childhood gone!

    RIP Mick.

Yes the only thing worth watching on the 'dead' part of Saturday afternoon before you could anticipate the footie results!

Away from wrestling, Mick was a kind, polite easy going gentleman, the complete opposite of his ring persona!

Yes they were good innocent days really and sadly missed. It always made me laugh with the ringside grannies clouting the baddy with their handbags while the goody was duly beaten up - all athletic panto but better than the American tosh.

Agreed, the American stuff is so obviously choreographed that you'd have to be an imbecile not to see through it, the stuff we used to watch in the old days was also scripted but had all the appearance of being genuine!

Great stuff on a Saturday afternoon - McManus, Pallo, Kendo Nagasaki, Billy Two Rivers, Johnny Kwango, Adrian Street, Catweazle - all legends of my childhood. The WWE product is all glitz and glamour and in may ways has the makings of a rock gig. I've been a few times to see it and it's a cracking (but expensive) night out.

Worth getting a few of the Kent Walton commentated DVD's showing the legends of Saturday afternoon wrestling - terrific entertainment.

    RIP Mick.

I couldn't believe he was 93 - that means he was in his fifties when he was wrestling. Do we know if Giant Haystacks is still alive?

Ah. Not greatly surprised, the strain on his heart must have been immense.

That was when it all went downhill for me - Haystacks and Daddy was utter balls and totally predictable. tag matches with the Royals was probably the highlight.
