Camelot and Al Kazeem are the headline acts among a field of just four declared for Sunday's Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. ......... Read more
The Tattersalls Gold Cup Stakes should be renamed as the O’Brien Benefit Stakes. No surprise that with Camelot entered, nobody else is bothering to show up. Strange that they are not taking Camelot to Epsom for the Coronation Cup over a mile-and-a-half – I assume that St Nicholas Abbey is entered there.
I think Camalot could get a surprise tomorrow. I always felt he was terribly overhyped but when so many good racing pundits are convinced of him you doubt your judgement. I am really pleased he has stayed in training as the horse will have an opportunity to clear up what was left in doubt last year. My prediction is that he will lose tomorrow but he obviously should win a race such as this against opposition yet to race let alone win at group one level, either way however I really don't think he will cut it against established group one horses. I will hold my hands up (and it wont be the first time) if he confirms what many suspected last year that he was a superstar but I don't think he is. I very much liked Magician however today and he does look a genuine group one horse and I hope he gets to take on the hugely talented Dawn Approach.
Well done BlueSky9 on predicting that “Superstar” Camelot would not win at The Curragh. I have to admit that I have considered Al Kazeem to be an “ordinary” horse. His previous Group 3 win suggested that. The fact that he was able to stalk Camelot in a four horse race (one of those being his pacemaker) and then readily pick him off indicates that either there are two outstanding older horses in training (unlikely) or that neither of them is a Superstar. The Ballydoyle excuse machine will have been doing overtime. For what it is worth, I agree with you that Magician looks like a real Group 1 star but whether he ever meets terrific miler Dawn Approach we wait to see.
