Hang on a minute, I'm sure a dodgy bloke like Marcus Evans would make use of this scheme. I'll just look for our name.

    Nope still can't see it!

Sadly this kind of thing is all too common in modern Britain.I guess that it's just supposed to make a little bit more available for those at the top of the wage structure who really need it.

Yeah, it's unfortunately the way these things are going. If you want to do something you enjoy, you tend to have to get the experience first, and that experience is regularly unpaid. I'm doing that this summer, 6 weeks full-time work for nowt, because with the job market so competitive in my chosen field, I have to do it to stand out.

That's so draconian, even YTS have a minimum wage, or so I believe?

It's just their way of ensuring that the race to the bottom continues and that the majority without saleable skills or access to the gravy train continue to be exploitable. This is principally the reason why,at the age of 24 I started my own business because I refused to be exploited.Sadly today what I did is no longer possible.I began with a £3000 overdraft provided by an avuncular bank manager.Today I doubt you could do it with a fifty grand interest free loan.

Probably, but in the hazy world of academia, it's quite common for undergrads to work in the labs unpaid over the summer, in return for a decent reference, filler on a CV, and if you're very lucky, your name on a journal article. Unfortunately I've decided the field I want to go into is highly competitive, so just doing well in my degree isn't enough.

I just dont see why we couldnt operate positions like this at minimum wage. It could still be a year long position but would allow a wider range of applicants.

I was at school with a chap who I was speaking to the other day (we left sixth form 3 years ago), who now runs his own laser-scanninng business with a bank loan - some of that equipment is 60k a pop so something must be available!
