Gills in peace. Looking through here it seems Paulo did not really shine this season for you, he is young and I think for a keeper has a lot to learn so did not expect him to suddenly blow the Premiership away but what do you all think for him moving forward? A loan out on the cards?
He needs to go out on loan. He isn't going to be first choice here for a good few years yet. Maybe he should go back on loan to you!
I don't think he is a bad goalkeeper. He didn't command his area and back-line well enough, and was a bit flappy at times. He wasn't ready and Adkins chanced it. His one on one's are decent enough and his kicking is pretty awesome. He'd probably benefit from a loan.
Hi throwoff, felt we threw him in to the 1st team to early, he clearly wasn't ready for the big stage and therefore cost us points early season. Having said that, we were swapping keepers at the time, almost on a weekly basis which didn't help? Will he come back bigger and stronger? Not sure, keepers of his age either come through either stronger and better for the early exposure or fade and disappear. Think the jury's out at the moment.
I agree he'd benefit from a loan but does anyone remember that save against Newcastle low down to his right from a header? Best save i saw this season in open play.
I'd forgotten you have the great Tommy Forecast between the sticks? How's he doing? Is he behaving himself on and off the pitch?
As others have said, Adkins gambled on making him first-choice and then seemed to be afraid to damage his confidence by dropping him, no matter how many errors he made. He showed signs of promise and made some excellent saves, but he just made too many mistakes and probably cost us 6 points or so with them. If he can cut the errors out though, he could have a bright future, but it is telling that after Adkins saying he would be first-choice for Argentina in the future, the Argentine Pochettino was rather more reserved when asked about him.
He certainly had a lot of potential, it was showing, but it's clear he isn't ready for premier league football - he needs a loan. I'm a big fan of his though.
He didn't show much at all as a goalkeeper, his kicking and size were the only promising things I saw of him. He won't make it at Saints as by the time he peaks we will have exceeded even his optimum development. I would loan him out to a league 1 or league 2 team and hope he gets some game time.
He never plays, happy to bench warm and we are happy for him to sit there. Stuart Nelson is our number one and it would take a big, big name to remove him from that position for the coming season. If Nelson gets a ban or an injury I still don't think we would see Forecast play, we have a couple of decent kids in the youth team who would likely play. I see Gazza heading out on a season loan, it will make or break him.
Definitely needs to play more. He made one world-class save, against Newcastle I think, but otherwise was poor to say the least. The worst thing was his inability to come for crosses that should have been his. Admittedly, he came into the team at the worst possible time but he needs to improve in all departments I'm afraid. Even his kicking, which seems to be getting the thumbs up from most people here. I thought his distribution was careless at times. I know he came with a reputation for having a huge kick on him but I can't say it was obvious. Hopefully, it is games and confidence he requires. We released a goalkeeper last year from the academy, Jack Dovey, and right now I would say he was better.
He needs a loan and to the Championship. Both him and Butland excelled in L2, Butland then had a go at the Championship and I think Gazzaniga deserved to have a shot, too. I think that Gazzaniga should have been loaned out shortly after we got Boruc, but of course Boruc took time to find form and Gazza was our number one for a couple of months. Butland will now be first team for Stoke next season and I think that if we'd given Gazza a season in the Championship, he'd replace Davis as Boruc's understudy.
Didn't Pochettino say he didn't want to loan him out as he'd rather he learned good habits here rather than bad habits at another club?
I always liked him when I saw him play, he always had this sort of cockiness that top keepers have. He made some great saves at times, but also made a few important mistakes. I believe we were most successful, point per game wise, with him between the sticks as well which I thought was interesting.
