Thats just cost me mo fo's Furious Paolo Di Canio has blasted Sunderland's "arrogant and ignorant" stars, claiming they have tainted Sunderlandâs image. The Black Cats boss let rip after Phil Bardsley was pictured lying on the floor of a casino and covered in £50 notes during a night out with team-mates ahead of *yesterdayâs defeat at Spurs. And he suggested the defender, left out of the squad at White Hart Lane, and seven others fined last week could be booted out. In a blistering attack he hit out: âItâs disgusting me even to see the image for the club. âItâs not about going out with your friend and getting back at two oâclock or three oâclock, which is late. You can close one eye to that. But not full of alcohol and walking like this.â The Italian also suggested English football has a culture of *indiscipline, which he intends to crack down on. He added: âI thought it was only at Swindon, League Two, that they were arrogant, ignorant *footballers because theyâve not had many chances to stay at the top level. âI have to tell you *unfortunately I found a worse environment in terms of discipline in this club. âIf we donât punish this kind of behaviour, what are we talking about, a fantastic academy? âTheyâre very educated people, but if we donât punish this kind of *behaviour, how do they grow up? Thinking they can laugh about what they saw on the website picture? âMaybe they think itâs fantastic; to be like a *gangster. But what mentality are we going to deliver?â Pictured with Bardsley is defender Matthew Kilgallon. They went out to celebrate after Arsenalâs win over Wigan on Tuesday ensured Sunderlandâs Premier League survival. Bardsley is understood to have denied being drunk, but Di Canio said: âLook, I spoke to him and he looked in the sky. He couldnât listen to what Iâm going to tell him. Heâs blurry. I donât know whatâs happened. âThe day after I *discovered what had happened and, obviously, I ring my player and I discovered it was a really, really bad situation. I discovered that out with him were other players, but the others left the two guys before they went into the casino. They stay there until early in the morning, which is completely different. âTuesday night they went out together, had dinner and watched the game. They are allowed to do this. They had a drink, celebrated and they were happy. I can imagine. âTen oâclock, 11 oâclock, midnight, but what I saw is not acceptable for my club and for my squad.â He attacked the *attitude of the other players he punished and insisted he had the backing of owner Ellis Short. He said: âThe owner knows. We are going to sit and go through this but he knows many things. âLast week I fined seven players. And this morning, one player who could not have been involved in my squad for other reasons, decided âI donât train todayâ. âThey make the diagnosis themselves. He said he had food poisoning. Sorry, are you the doctor? The doctor tried to contact him and for three hours he switched off his telephone.â Di Canio said he fined an injured player who failed to follow club policy over treatment and disappeared at lunchtime, switching off his mobile. âWhen I gave him the fine he was surprised. He thought what he did was normal. âAfter losing 6-1 to Aston Villa we had a meeting at 4.00pm. Someone arrived at 4.20. They live five minutes away. âI know every time the player will go to the PFA, the PFA will call and I have to try to explain why. They excuse people that behave like Phil Bardsley.â
This could seriously backfire on Paolo if he doesn't calm down a little. It's ok letting everyone know who's boss but I'm not comfortable in him airing his problems with the players in public, I'd much rather he keeps that sort of thing behind closed doors. I love Paolo but I fear this may come back to bite him on his arse.
Whilst Bardsley was probably within his rights to enjoy a night out, the reason in which it is reported he did is completely wrong… I imagine Di Canio laid down the law as it were when he came in to the club and think he could of possibly gave warnings before the fines… However tough love is needed at our club and Bardo has more or less sealed his own fate…Killa and Bramble are on the way too
Have to agree I'm worried he may be going a bit overboard. Having said that, from the above snippet it seems like all the fines etc are justified - behavior like that would lose the average joe his job never mind a paltry fine! Unfortunately the truth of it is these are no average joe's. These are millionaire footballers who are used to the playboy lifestyle and as such a different approach is required. It's a tough one because on the one hand I'm completely in agreement with Paolo that we need to inject some professionalism into the club, but at the same time I don't want to see the entire club brought into turmoil... I'll trust Ellis and Paolo to get it right between them but getting a bit iffy for me this like.
Massive risk strategy as this could all blow up in our faces. This is PDC's biggest flaw for me and his lack of top flight management is showing. This could have been kept in house and dealt with out of the media glare but in slaughtering Bardsley in the way he has, I fear he is causing a dressing room rift and he may have to rely on some of those he has slated if they can't be moved on, or adequate replacements found before the new season. We have a pitifully thin squad as it is so we cant just let everyone go? My concerns over PDC have been shown to be real and I just hope he knows what he is doing. This isn't the 4th tier or 3rd tier of football after all.
Paolo is what he is. He has some great traits, and some traits that not everyone agrees with. I see him being a great success or a great fail. I really don't know what to expect from Dicanio. He'll either make Sunderland a fantastic, united unit, or Alienate most of the sqaud from himself and destroy the togetherness in the dressing room.
This is what most people feared. That said, the new players coming in will know what to expect. They will be PDC players so perhaps there is less opportunity for crap like this to surface.
I', glad it's out in the open, cliques, arrogance, and a lack of respect for the club, I don't give 2 ****s that they've gone PFA that is yet more proof of their pampered, high and mighty bullshit attitude. We finished 4th bottom, the players couldn't give a ****. Paolo retains my 110.000% backing, why should they, players representing our club and city, be spared publicly?

All good sentiments PP but the reality is we may well be stuck with a lot of these and PDC may have to ask them to play for him next season? It could have been handled far, far better imo and I think we are in a spot of trouble here. Hope you're right and I'm wrong but I'm massively concerned where this may lead to goin forward?
My concern is that decent players will reject the opportunity but the lesser ones will accept it readily and we will be no better off than we are now with a 2nd rate squad. I like PDC and his enthusiasm is infectious but this for me was always the issue. I think we are in a spot of bother here.
Mate, if we are stuck with most of these lads next season, we are ****ed anyway. Some of them have ability, but a complete lack of respect for the club, or any ambition to do more. The one's worth worrying about will buy into Paolo, dare I mention Adam Johnson, a stone lighter and 8 times the player he was under MON? If nothing else, he has confirmed what we suspected, in that many of our players lack the mentality and desire to succeed, it's better, IMO, that that is open knowledge.
i agree with this completely, im sick to death of their arrogence and could'nt care less attitude they are supposed to be proffessionals so its about time they acted like pro's.
i admire pdc for bringing this into the open and i dont thik anyone can deny that its the truth, but obviously some of the team dont like or cant stomach it, personally ive got no sympathy with them, im sick of watching them and feeling ashamed cos its them who should be ashamed not going out celebrating cos wigaN got beat by someone else.
How many of us would give our left nut to be in their position? I would for one. In the life of us regular joes, we don't conform to the rules, we get sacked. End of. There are no unions we can go to (well we can, but breaking rules which were on the contract we signed would leave us with no leg to stand on), we just tighten the purse strings, hope we're ahead on our bills, and bust our asses looking for another job. These 'professional' footballers think they are in a completely different planet to us. Footballers I admire are ones like Scholes. Hates publicity, loves his family and truly loved the game. I just wish more professional footballers of todays world chose to be more like him.
**** them i say! Just deciding they wont train, not signing autographs, going out getting bladdered on a school night, **** them, these twats will have lost the majority backing of the fans anyhow. Out with the old in with the new Oh and **** em!
Something tells me that you lot might just be in for an interesting couple of months! PDC needs to avoid stepping into Harry Redknapp territory by not publicly humiliating his players though, no good will come of that if you need to sell these players.
