It's not harsh they're just surplus requirements now, some perhaps haven't been given the opportunities they deserved but quite a few of those players have had a chance to show their standard. They'll never be forgotten as they've been instrumental in this clubs rise but it's time to upgrade. Wage wise I'd probably imagine a bit more since we're been promoted etc.
Completely agree, to be honest, I am sad to see him go. Met him once in Giraffe in Norwich, nice guy, but always gave everything on the pitch. I think he'll do well where ever he ends up anyway. Could potentially see him going Hull myself.
I just felt calling them deadwood was a little harsh! I was averaging it out across all ten players based on some of them being youths. A pure guess, but I wouldn't have thought that Korey, Tom or George were on much more than 1k pw, so taking hat into account I can see the total cost of all ten of these being around £40k per week
I think your estimation of the players wages may have been shy. Conference South players are on £500 a week, some £500 a game, so I would imagine the three lads would have been on more than a grand a week. I wouldn't be surprised if it was saving nearly double what you estimate.
Be interesting to see whether we sign up any of the Youth Cup winners on Pro contracts in the summer. I suppose that's probably being assessed my Hughton, Adams etc. at the moment.
Simeon was on around £9k per week in the Championship. Then we got promoted and he was named in the 25 man squad. Each player named in the 25 man premier league squad received pay rises in the first season as well as a "staying up" bonus. They had a pay rise this season and also a larger "staying up" bonus. I think Simeon would be on around £15-20k P/W by now.
Interesting - I don't imagine it was as high as £20k pw because that's what Holt's new contract was rumoured to be around as our highest earner (I think £22k was touted), but I am aware that strikers earn the best so I could see Simeon being on a good wage. So, as a purely speculative (and admittedly pointless) conservative estimate: Elliot Ward £12k pw Marc Tierney £10k pw Simeon Jackson £15k pw Korey Smith £1.5k pw Tom Adeyemi £1.5k pw Lee Camp £8k pw George Francomb £1.5k pw Ramil Sheriff £0.5k pw Chris Martin £12k pw Scott Olumide Durojaye £0.5k pw We would be saving over £60k per week! Admittedly this probably only covers Bassong, Snodgrass and Garrido or so, but still, makes a real difference
I don't really see there being a staying up bonus. If they signed contracts in the Championship, I doubt there would have been a bonus written in for staying up in the Premier League. Jackson I reckon is probably on 12k. There probably was a wage increase for gaining promotion though. I think perhaps players we have signed or renewed contracts since being in the Prem would have that clause in there contract.
Really sorry to see George Francomb on the list, I was hoping he would be given a chance. That's a bit of a downer for the acamedy boys asperations!
I never did think that Francomb, Korey-Smith or Adeyemi were anything other than average Div 1 or lower players. To be fair you only have to look at the Clubs who took them on loan. Korey-Smith had a couple of spells at lowly Championship Clubs but the rest of the loan deals for the 3 were Clubs like Wimbledon, Oldham etc. I am surprised we kept them as long as we did and I suspect that if Lambert had stayed they would have gone last summer. What is more interesting is which other players on contract ' are available for the right money ' . Barnett is an obvious candidate and if he goes I calculate that leaves 4 vacant spots in the 25 man squad. Are we likely to sign anymore than 4 in addition to Garrido and Wolfswinkel unless we get an offer we can't refuse for a squad player?
I would hope we will sign at least 4 new players this summer, one more striker, two wingers , as let slip by RVW, a creative mid, and cover at LB. This i feel would be minimum needed for next season. On another note i do feel me should have tried to sell Jackson earlier to regain some of the fee we paid the Gills, seems poor to have just let him run down his contract and leave for nowt !
I feel a little bit for Elliott Ward as he never got a chance under Hughton, I think with the protection the defence this year he'd have done OK. Smith scoring on his home debut is one of my fondest memories in recent years. Never really rated Jackson, appalling touch and one dimensional and crap movement for the ball.
I really hope people aren't too disappointed if we don't sign another striker. I know it would be great, but it doesn't really make financial sense. We know Holt, with the right supply, can score lots of goals.
