I hate the man but will give credit where it`s due, he went to a club where he was hated and had a squad who had just seen off a good manager through dressing room politics yet he still managed to get them into the CL and a European final. He has (to me) been a success against all odds and so deserves a place in the top three (without Fergie) this season only.
They were 2nd and well in the title race when he took over. Now they have only just about qualified for the Champions League. How on earth can that be deemed success from the position they were in? He's been rubbish.
If not including Ferguson, then it has to be Wenger, Moyes and, through very gritted teeth, Benitez. Laudrup, AVB and Lambert just missing out.
Benitez is nowhere ****ing near. We are talking PL managers not including Fergie as hes got just one game left. Benitez in the PL is a joke. Awful manager who takes a team easily capable and makes them look embarrassingly ****.
I still don't get why anyone thinks Moyes is a good manager. He's averaged 8th in his time at Everton which sounds ordinary to me and even in Everton terms it's not very good as their all time league average is 7th. What is good about that exactly? (don't waffle about money spent as he's spent more than previous Everton managers but done a worse job on average)
Had you and City not won the lottery I suspect he would have a few trophies to his name by now. Hes taken everton to in and around the top 4 during a period where 2 teams have spent stupid money trying to compete.
Add yourself in and that's 3 and his average is still 8th so what about the other 5 teams? It doesn't matter how many times you say he's been in and around top 4 the FACT is that he's averaged 8th.
That doesnt mean hes finished 8th every season. United would of remained a top 2/3 side regardless of the oil money. Arsenal would of benefited more than any other club. Everton, Liverpool, Tottenham and then a few outside bets like Newcastle, Villa etc would of all had a shout of at least a top 4 finish. Chelsea would fall into the latter category. City would be in League One.
He's spent more than previous managers because it costs more to sign players. Remember when it cost £3.75m for Roy Keane, then a British transfer fee record. The records at £35m now, only 20 years later. That's almost a 100% increase in that time. So it obviously costs much much more to manage a football club.
In my opinion the best 3 managers are Sir Alex, Moyes and AVB on this seasons performances. Wenger would be in 4th, i think he deserves a mention
Before Moyes took over, Everton were regularly finishing in the bottom 6 of the Premier League and were in danger of getting relegated. In his 11 years, he has stabilised the club by gradually bringing in better players and enabling the team to play more in the way that he likes his teams to play with passing football. Initially they were having one good season followed by one bad season but by gradually building the team, he got them established in the top half of the table and the last 5 years they have consistently finished in the top 7 and the past 2 seasons have finished above their city rivals having spent only a fraction really on their team to what Liverpool had done. He may not have won any trophies, but then Martinez has won a trophy and also seen his side relegated. Which is preferable? When you consider where Everton were before Moyes took over, it is hard to envisage any other manager they could have appointed having turned them from potential relegation fodder into regular challengers for European places in the same time period.
