fair play he is one player of his chosen career who has used it to the maximum effect even though he was not the best player of his generation....the brand Beckham will continue to make him millions for a long long time yet....He will always be associated for scoring a last gasp free kick that gave England qualification to the world cup.....also for getting himself sent off in the world cup and lastly sir alex kicking a football boot in his eye......He also will be known for helping to get the 2012 Olympics to the UK.......anyone reckon he will get a knighthood soon....has to happen ain't it..

Sir David of Peckham, God forbid.

He is a better ambassador than he was ever a footballer though.

Beckham never held himself out as being one of the best players ever - because he wasn't. But on his day he had a real knack of turning a game. Whether it was from a wicked cross or a trademark free kick.

It's fashionable to mock and rubbish Beckham but please - this was a far from average player who was part of arguably the best team this country has ever seen. LA Galaxy were winning nothing until he came along and that should tell you something. Bottom line? you must have something going for you if you win titles in 4 countries. What a record that is.

I like him as a person and he's maximised his income through other things. Good luck to him. <ok>

Totally agree with this. He was also very fit with a terrific engine. Alan Shearer said that he fancied himself in a foot race against Beckham early in a game but never fancied it late on because Beckham was still going strong. Some of our team should take note of that. Players cannot learn talent but they can see to it that they are as fit and strong as they could possibly be.

What Beckham did was maximise the ability he did have and he can only be applauded for that.

Agree with theIvor and KJ and add that he was a great role model to kids (barring the one red card on Simeone). An ultimate professional and passionate about the game, his club and his country and from all accounts the first on the training pitch and the last off it. Listening to the various different pros past and present commenting over the last 24hrs on Beckham he was one of the few players that was liked in all dressing rooms that he played/trained. That says a lot about the man and the player. He could easily have turned into someone with his head up his arse. I always thought he came across as an honest player who just liked to play football!

As the comments say, Waddle has a severe case of sour grapes. What is emphasised by other good judges, including Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp was the dedication, commitment and work ethic that he brought to his profession.

Add that to his good nature, approachability and general demeanour and you have a first class role model for kids today. Come to that, there are many professionals playing now who would do well to take a leaf out of his book. They would improve out of sight. Oh, and there's also the little matter that he always wore the shirt of his country with great pride. Giggs and other "pseudo" Welshmen take note.

Totally agree with what you say. Too often people forget he was a great player, not just a pants model!

Some people tend to regard Beckham as an average footballer because he never took people on or dribbled with the ball etc. The thing with Beckham was that he never needed to adapt that side of his game as he could drop a ball on a six pence from 40-60 yards away. By far the best long ball passer/crosser the game has seen in the last 15 years or so.
Does he deserve to be knighted though? Not before Sir Ryan Giggs <ok>
